RIP Andy Rooney
Andy Rooney passed away yesterday. Roughly a month after retiring from CBS.
Andy's Curmudgeony style was a huge factor in Sixty Minutes ratings. His commentary at the end of each episode was always amusing to watch and listen to.
Andy would discuss damn near anything and everything, Milk bottles, ties, door frames, service on airliners to the stupid inventions that always appear on commercials.
At times he would be dead serious about his discussions, the June 6th 1979 commentary about D-Day still sticks in my mind. Andy would know, Andy was there.
I like to think Andy pulled a Charles Schulz and knew his time was near, and wrapped things up with CBS in time to hear the accolades about his career. 1097 TV commentaries.
TV's version of Paul Harvey shall be missed.

He WAS the "60 Minutes" in my opinion. In past years it got to the point I stopped watching 99% of "60 Minutes," but then "HEY! Rooney's gonna be on. Switch the channel!" and we'd sit and listen to Andy Rooney.
And, you're right, Rabbi, he was the TV version of Paul Harvey (who I also miss hearing).
Thanks Andy! When we consider all the work you did for Stars & Stripes too, well over the 1097 TV spots.

Of note: Rooney was a correspondent for Stars & Stripes (the soldiers' newspaper), and I think it was in that capacity (or one for another paper) that he flew on bomber missions.
It's surprising what some of his contemporaries did. I think Walter Cronkite saw Market-Garden first hand on behalf of the United Press, and I'm pretty sure at least a few CBS guys flew on bombing missions (possibly even Edward R. Murrow himself).
This is not to mention Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable, who also flew bomber missions. Wouldn't see that today.

He was the last one on the air of the old 60 Minutes crew. He was a grumpy old man who could freely vent his opinions every week. Even when I disagreed with those opinions, I could respect them, and him. Thanks for all the commentary Andy Rooney.
One of his daughters, Emily Rooney, has a daily chat show on WGBH here in Boston. An hour on the radio and half an hour on TV. Again, she has all the typical liberal PBS opinions, but is willing to at least engage in a more honest debate than virtually anything else on PBS is willing to undertake. I hope that she does eventually learn to look past her prejudices. But now I know why she has been missing from her air shifts for the last few weeks. I sorrow for her loss, and for the western world's loss.

I'm not sure you got his eyebrows quite right -- witness:
