Death of a Despot, Gaddaffi
Today, is a great Historical day, That the people of Libya took matters into their own hands and dealt a overdue justice for themselves and the world.
Thanks to a US Predator drone launching a Hellfire missile, followed by a NATO airstrike on Qaddaffi's escaping convoy. Wacky Daffy instead pulled a Mussolini and like other Arab leader rats, hid in a hole, in this case a drainage pipe and was dragged out by Libyan freedom fighters. There he was shot in the gut and seriously roughed up by "His people" who took loads of photos of him. He pleaded with his captors "I am your father! Don't kill me!"
Seems he was also shot in the head to make sure he stops wasting oxygen.
Pity they didn't drag him through the streets and then hang him by his ankles like Mussolini.
But a chapter in world history is finally over!!
Now if Syria's leader al-Assad can meet a quick equally deserving end to his dictatorship.
Oh....Arafat is arguing with bin Ladin for those clueless.

Before I heard of the cancer thing, I would've bet on eventually getting screwed by the complete hosing of the Venezuelan oil infrastructure making that money dry up. Old equipment no longer maintained by competent engineers after nationalization of oil company resources ("Hey, if we don't have a say in how they run, why should we stick around?"), but subject to the "mañana" attitude eventually means things will fall down and go boom.
(Though, I suppose in a pinch they could ask Iran for help, since mellonhead is pretty chummy with them.)

Like was said by others, some other pimple on the ass of Humanity will come along. Just like any other criminal, there will be some schmuck who thinks that they are immune to reality, or that they're so freaking S-M-R-T smart that they can succeed as a dictator where others failed... right up to the point where reality cockslaps them in the face.
Technically, a NATO drone strike, a NATO airstrike - and a fuck load of NTC ground shelling and small arms fire.
Assuming this doesn't somehow go horribly wrong over the next few months or years (and it still might) someone's going to write a really interesting book on this war one day. If it does go well, then I can imagine that for decades to come young officers in training, in military academies all over the world, will be writing dissertations on, "Why the fuck Iraq didn't turn out like Libya."

My mistake. Rush Limbaugh. http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2795610/posts to start with.

"We voted for our brother, Barack," said Farrakhan, "a beautiful human being with a sweet heart, and now he's an assassin. They've turned him into them."
The White Man, says Farrakhan, forced Obama to bomb Libya for the oil. Obama's alleged humanitarian intent, he said, is merely a "noble motive to hide (America's) wicked agenda!"
I can't find an exact quote but there is enough here to know what was said and implied.

Call me sick, but
was dragged out by Libyan freedom fighters. There he was shot in the gut and seriously roughed up by "His people" who took loads of photos of him. He pleaded with his captors "I am your father! Don't kill me!"
But I could see an anthro pig being dragged out, squealing and scratching at the pipe.
Come to think of it, that may be pretty accurate.
Feel free to use it, Rabbi. It would be an honor ;)

"Death to the tyrant and all his kind!"
I'm not at all surprised that he died much like saddam: Like a rat in a hole. I was actually wondering what become of him, now I know.
I just got back from watching Ghostbusters in theaters and came home to this post. When I did a search I was actually surprised to read that he actually wore a wig.

I wonder who inherits Daffy's "Amazon Guard" in their high-heeled boots now that the whole family is dead? Poor women are going to have to back to wearing general issue. The punch line is that he actually apparently believed, in his heart, that the people of his country loved him. Right up to the end, I doubt he awakened to the fact of "no, not so much."
And now, thanks to the liberating forces of the USA, the country of Libya, free from the murderous reign of the bloody-handed tyrant, can descend into decades of chaos, with multiple more bloody-handed would-be tyrants funded by outsider states and small-minded warlords warring for control and crazy suicide bombers blowing up people indiscriminately, while everyday people suffer.
What...?
Yep. Look at Afghanistan. Look at Iraq. Shining examples of what happens when you remove the greater evil, and leave the lesser evils to do as they wish.
I really, really wish the USA would stop playing with people's lives because it thinks it is the self-appointed policeman of the world, and just once, think things through before running in guns blazing. Because, it should be obvious by now that some countries are not yet ready for democracy as long as certain parts of the populace still believe in 'might makes right'. And you cannot plant a policeman or an US soldier on every street to supervise them like children.

You are aware that NATO (not just the US) assistance was requested not only by the locals, but by the African Union, right? It's hardly a case of the US barging in because it wants to play "globocop".
But sure, let's stop interfering with others. I mean, more or less ignoring the rest of the world worked so well in the 1930s. Heck, while we're at it we can stop just charging in to assist other countries when a natural disaster hits them, too. Think of all the money to be saved by not redirecting entire battlegroups to help earthquake or typhoon victims.
Somewhat less sarcastically, "if we do X then something worse may come along" is a really weak reason to not do anything. And even if the US did do as you say, and pull away from the world in general, there'd probably be tons of bitching about how the US is "selfish" or whatnot.

I seem to vividly recall how it took the US and the Nato YEARS to intervene when Milosevich and his serbians were massacring bosnians and sending my fellow hungarians who lived in Yugoslavia to the front lines. Not to mention what they did to Croatia.
Oh yeah. There were no rich natural resources in Yugoslavia. My bad.
I find it an odd coincidence that while tribal wars are everyday stuff in most of 'black Africa', and drug-lords (often funded by the USA, actually) run a lot central and south Amerika, yet most of these interventions happen in the Arab lands... where by chance, the oil is located. I guess no-one cares to own acres of savannah and a few elephants?
I am not saying the US pull out of the world. I am saying that if it wants to change it for the better, it might do a little more then barge in guns blazing. As in, do some research on the country beforehand, secretly fund people who would be accepted as new leaders by the general populace... In Iraq, they removed Hussein, who despite being a brutal tyrant, managed to keep the various parts of the populace coexist by oppressing everyone. After his death, the kurds, the siites, the sunnites, the american-educated new elite... they all fell on each other's throats, and the USA and NATO was totally unprepared to deal with this. And it cost lives. Lots of lives. And still continues to do so. Afghanistan is worse, as it was never a real country - just an area controlled by warring warlords. The Soviets made a country out of it by force, as they usually did (look at all the 'X-astans') and the Taliban took over from them. Trying to continue to rule with democracy was a really, really bad move. They were just not ready for that. The US accidentally bombing all the tribal leaders to kingdome come ("We are sorry if our bombings caused you any inconvienience!" - it's like a Monty Python sketch...) did not help.
So yeah. The US is doing the same thing as the Soviets did, these days. The difference is, the Soviets said they were spreading 'revolution of the masses' and the USA is saying they are spreading democracy - and they have much, much better press. But basically, they both replace the current regime with their own puppets, and then reap the benefits. You'd have to be blind not to see it.

Wacky Daffy pulled an Animal farm there in Libya, "Some are more equal than others", certain tribes were rewarded, many ignored or minimally assisted, some outright slaughtered. The Berber's were literally wiped out and those remaining were basically told to stop speaking the language and use Arab approved names. Needless to say...The Berber's are certainly happy he's gone.
Plus his own Tribe were exclusively educated and held key positions in the military and government. The Southern tribes were also sucked up to and later betrayed by Gaddaffi during the Chadian civil war.
Last thing I heard he was doing for his nation was running a huge water pipeline south from the North. His goal was massive desalination plants to pipe water south to a particularly friendly or approved tribe.
All at great expense.
Oh yeah, don't forget the Palestinians he booted out in the late 80s, seems he too was fed up with their antics.

Gaddafi created a program that would house all Libyans. He made a promise that he would not build a home for his parents until every other Libyan had access to a house or apartment. However his father passed on before that sadly.
Eventually as he moved away from the "unaligned" movement that spread across the Arab world he tried to be Come a bit more pro soviet in order to acquire technology (of various kinds not just weapons). But they refused to allow Libya into the Warsaw Pact as a favor to the US. At the time both were pushing for the SALT treaties.
But again you prove how tribal Libyan culture is, even Gaddafi was prey to it. Then again as they say, need to break a few eggs to make an omelet. In the 80s he saw the cold war ending so he cut off alot of his Liberation fronts and terrorists cells, PLO supporters among them.
I also agree that many things he did in the later years were bad. Like giving his sons and fellow tribesmen positions of power. Such as the Khamis brigade.
One thing I like to point out is that if the American revolution took place in the 70s-80s Gaddafi would have supplied and funded Washington. I think he actually said that one in a interview or something, cant remember off hand.
Also having been on the receiving end of an ethnic conflict I can say that I expected some sort of ethnic conflict came out of this. But even if Gaddafi won he would have had to overhaul the regime.
Oh fun fact: Gaddafi put out the INTERPOL Arrest warrant for Osama Bin Laden 2 years before 9/11.

I was quite surprised about how the USA turned on him for this very reason. I quite remember how many (now famous) European leaders were inviting Gaddhaffi into their country, shaking hands with him, and supplying his country with tools and such.
My country, Hungary, actually had pretty good ties to Libya. While the Soviets kept their distance, they allowed Hungary to act as a proxy between Libya. A lot of medical equipment was sent there, and libyian doctors were trained by hungarians. I knew a guy who frequently travelled there to fix ECG devices and such.
My guess is, with both Hussein gone and Egypt becoming harmless as well, the USA did not need him anymore, and threw him as a bone to the various forces wanting his downfall. Now, I predict 1-2 years of bloody wars between the tribes while the USA and NATO forces stand around shrugging their shoulders, then when most competitors have eliminated themselves, the newly appointed puppet governor will march in and sit on the throne.

I would never trust ANY government. To quote Douglas Adams:
- One of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them: It is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. Anyone who is capable of getting themselves into a position of power should on no account be allowed to do the job. Another problem with governing people is people.

Being a christian, I don't think the death of a person, no matter how evil he or she was, should be celebrated. It is sometimes necessary, but you should not cheer for someone's death. I grew up in an oppressed state, and many of the ex-communist leaders, often with blood on their hands, still live around here, 80 year old. But I don't think at this time it'd serve anyone if they were executed for their crimes.
I agree. He should have been put on trail at The Hague and sentenced for any wrong doings. That is the civilized response. I am disgusted by the whole of the Libyan people to revert to such barbaric logic. May a generation of pestilence fall apon the small minded and weak.
To celebrate death is to deny all that humanity has accomplished.
To celebrate death is to deny all that humanity has accomplished.
I would not go as far as to wish pestilence on them, but yeah, a (not mock) trial would have been the civilized response.
But angry mobs are not known to listen to reason, I mean, this is how most dethroned tyrants ended up from Caligula to Mussolini.
If he had been put on trial in the Hague, he would have probably "mysteriously" died in prison, like Miloshevich, as he knew a bit too much about certain, nowadays totally respectable world leaders. I mean, Gadhaffy shook hands with Bush the Senior....
