Inner-Selves No. 7, Part A
“Aww great! We lost him! This is terrible!” Fidget screamed in frustration. He and Kat were standing in an alleyway, they’d found no trace of the combat sprite that was now inhabiting Fidget’s body. “Thisisn’t good at all, that combat sprite is dangerous, the Eternity Care Center ordered them destroyed for a very good reason” Kat said. “Dangerous? How so? You still havn’t filled me in on the details yet” Fidget asked. Kat pulled out some paper and more finger paint from her bag, then began to draw some poor illustrations for her description. “A long time ago, the ECC researched new ways to fight the spirit eaters, one idea was to create artificial spirits known as combat sprites. These combat sprites would inhabit a dead body and use their own unique abilities to fight the spirit eaters. The ECC later ruled the project too controversial, the use of dead bodies was deemed unethical, and therefore an order was given to terminate all combat sprites. Understand so far?” she said. “Yes, but your stupid paintings make it seem like it’s not that big of a deal” Fidget chuckled. Kat hit him on the head and drew on his face some more. “Moving on…this combat sprite somehow avoided his termination, and most likely carries a grudge against youth sprites, if we don’t stop him, things could get ugly if the ECC discovered his existence” Kat concluded with another poor painting. “Not if I find him first, I’m gonna make him pay for ruining my reputation in front of the class, he made me look like a pervert! My whole image is shattered forever!” Fidget moaned as he covered his face in shame. “So he acts like he does on purpose?...Interesting…” Kat thought to herself.
Meanwhile at Speckle’s shop, preparations were being made to deal with the crisis at hand. “Fluff how could you?! Didn’t you look at the label on the other side of the box?! It says ‘recalled’” Scratch shouted at the panda girl. “I’m sorry Scratch, I didn’t see it, that side wasn’t showing” Fluff said meekly. “Calm down Scratch, we’ll take care of it” Speckle said to the rabbit. Fluff walked over to Speckle with her head lowered. “I’m so sorry boss, I didn’t mean to do it, I’ll accept any punishment you give me” she said almost in tears. Speckle smiled a little and patted her head. “It’s ok, accidents happen, we just gotta clean up the mess, that’s all” he reassured her. Fluff raised her head and smiled a little. “Thank you Mr. Speckle” she sniffled. Graham came into the room and spoke. “Boss, everything is ready.” “Good to hear” said Speckle. He grabbed a stick from a corner that looked like one a dog would play fetch with, as Scratch grabbed a baseball bat and Fluff grabbed a pop gun. “Alright everyone, let’s go retrieve the merchandise” Speckle said. They left the shop to go find the combat sprite they’d sold to Kat earlier that day.
At the school playground, the combat sprite’s temper boiled over, he jumped the fence and snatched the game away from the kid that was contemplating destroying his monster. “You jerks! How dare you do something like that?! What gives you the right to decide something has no right to live?!” he shouted at them. The kids cowered in fear, this guy looked like he meant business. The combat sprite smashed the game player and picked up the two kids by the front of their shirts. “Ow! Please let us go, it’s just a game!” one of the boys begged. “Ya you big bully, don’t you play games?!” the other screamed. The combat sprite was fuming, the kids weren’t taking this seriously at all, they didn’t understand the point of it, he wanted to beat some sense into them. Just then Fidget and Kat found him, and Fidget freaked out when he saw what he was doing. “Hey leave them alone!” Fidget shouted. The combat sprite heard him and set the kids down, he charged at Fidget. “You’re always in the way!” he shouted at Fidget. He jumped and readied to kick him. Fidget blocked the kick with his rattle. “I know your story pal, and I understand how you must feel, but you can’t take out your anger on those weaker than yourself” Fidget said to him while blocking more attacks. “Shut up! How could you possibly understand?!” the combat sprite shouted. He kicked Fidget hard enough to knock him down to the ground, took one look at the kids and ran off again. Kat helped Fidget to his feet. “It’s just as I thought, his bitter hatred is getting the better of him” Kat said. “You’re right, I can’t understand, but still, what you’re doing is wrong…” Fidget thought to himself.
A few seconds later, another spirit eater emerged near the school playground, it sensed the two kids first and headed their direction. Fidget and Kat were on the move, looking for the combat sprite again, Kat’s phone started ringing. “Fidget, we have to forget about him for now, there’s another spirit eater, and it’s really close” Kat said alarmed. The combat sprite had sensed the presence of the spirit eater, and headed back towards it. “It’s near those kids…I shouldn’t help them after what they did, but if I leave them alone, I’m no better than them” he thought to himself. The spirit eater dived down to attack the two boys, they didn’t sense it at all. Just before it could strike, the combat sprite kicked the spirit eater in the face with its super legs and knocked it away. It took out the school fence as it landed, scaring the kids away. “Leave them alone, you have no right to kill them!” the combat sprite shouted at it. “You brat! You cost me my lunch, I’ll just have to settle for you instead!” it shouted as it lunged at him. The combat sprite avoided a few swipes of its claws, as he attempted another kick, a claw swiped at his open spot, slashing his shoulder. The combat sprite moaned in pain, clutching his damaged shoulder to stop the bleeding. “It’s impressive that you can see me, but you’re hardly a tasty meal, I’ll go after those boys next!” the monster said as it readied the final blow. Fidget ran up and jumped, slashing the monster in the face with his rattle, the monster screamed and disintegrated. Fidget looked over at the combat sprite, and noticed the wounded shoulder. “What were you thinking?! You hurt my body! Why did you take that thing on by yourself?” Fidget lectured. “It was gonna hurt those two kids, I couldn’t just do nothing” the combat sprite said lowering his head. Fidget was confused, didn’t he try to hurt those boys before?
Fidget and the combat sprite sat down by the fence, Fidget decided to talk things out instead of trying to fight him again. “So why did you save those two? I thought you hated them” Fidget asked. “Because if I didn’t help them, then I’d be no better than the ones who tried to kill me” he replied. Fidget had heard the story from Kat, but was anxious to hear the other side of it. “I was created to fight spirit eaters, but just a few days after I was created, it was decided that I had to die. I watched countless other combat sprites get killed, while I waited for my turn. Somehow I was lucky enough to have my housing unit get accidentally mixed in with replacement spirits for youth sprites, and wound up in the living world. I had a lot of time to think, and I decided that no one had the right to kill anyone, everyone deserves a chance at life. That’s why I will never kill a living thing” it said as it started to cry. Fidget felt sorry for him, but this sentimental moment was short lived, when suddenly two adults and two kids walked up to the two of them.
“Oh good, we found you just in time” Speckle said. He touched Fidget’s body with the end of his stick and the housing unit was upchucked from his mouth, his body was now lifeless. Speckle picked up the piece of the pacifier and turned to leave. “Hey hold it! Just who are you guys?!” Fidget said. Speckle froze, he had hoped to make a quick getaway, but couldn’t. He turned back around and looked at Fidget with a shocked look on his face. “I’m not really sure how to answer that question…” Speckle replied. Kat ran up to the group. “Hey Fidget, I noticed you took care of the spirit eater and….oh, Speckle, why are you and your workers here?” she said. “Oh, Ms. Kat, we were just leaving, we got what we came for, so… bye bye” he said trying to walk away again. “Hold on! What’re you gonna do with that combat sprite?!” Fidget stammered. Speckle realized he wasn’t getting out of this, besides, he had to tell a youth sprite what he was supposed to tell him. “No choice, I gotta destroy him” he replied. Fidget gritted his teeth, he didn’t believe the combat sprite deserved this at all. “Wait a second Speckle, I believe that belongs to me” Kat said. “Now Ms. Kat, you know I have to get rid of this, it’s um…defective” “I didn’t notice anything wrong with it, in fact, I’m 100% satisfied with my purchase, don’t you have a strict no returns policy?” “Well yes but…” “But nothing Speckle, besides, I know you’re operating outside the law, it’d be a shame for me to have to report this to the ECC” Kat grinned as she said it. Speckle thought it over, then handed it back to Kat. “You’ve got me there Kat, but I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into, harboring a fugitive is a pretty serious offense” he replied. “Believe me, I know” Kat said as she accepted it. They said their goodbyes and the crew of Speckle’s shop went back to the store, with Scratch complaining that there was no fighting the whole time. After Fidget got back in his body and they took care of his shoulder, he and Kat walked home, with the combat sprite safely tucked away in Kat’s bag, attached to the front of the pacifier.
