Okay SO: This is what I reallllly wanted to get out of my head. Spoilers for the IDW comics below:
I don't like the official final fight in issue 79. I think it's very unsatisfying. I'll get into that properly at some point, because I plan on making a video about it, but for now, just know that I do not like it.
I think that one of the ways they could fix things is if they have a sort of... do over. I think that if Mimic survived his injuries, they should have a more thematically appropriate final showdown. Something that actually plays into the themes and ideas that they were building up between these two. Mimic is an actor: He's got a severe case of Paranoid Personality Disorder. He thinks everyone is wearing a mask. That everyone is acting and putting on a show, reflecting their desires back at each other in order to manipulate them into getting what they want. I think that the true final battle should take place in a theater, with emphasis on masks and mirrors. Whisper wears a mask almost all the time, and I think that Mimic, after experiencing this massive turning point, absolutely NEEDS to see her "true face." He doesn't care about his own survival anymore. He doesn't care about beating her. He doesn't care who dies. He wants to see HER. He wants to see her mask, both physically and metaphorically, come off. He needs to know if his way of seeing the world is wrong or not. I imagine he looks as badly as he does, because the explosion did quite a number on him. As an octopus, he could fully recover. He could grow it all back. But he can't wait. He needs to know. That is what I want to see. Something with actual thematic closure and character development.
