I find it incredibly difficult to photograph dragonflies, since they almost never sit still for long enough! This one, however, did, and was surprisingly unconcerned even when my camera lens was a matter of centimetres away. I'm not good on identifying insects, but the most likely candidate would seem to be the Common Hawker. I'm fairly sure it's some type of hawker, at any rate.

Wow, that is an amazingly close up shot, and almost looks like it should be in a competition somewhere!
I am almost a little disappointed it was genuinely that close up though. For a moment I thought it was going to be like the old days where you were actually sat in a building a mile away with a 10x zoom lense pointed through 2 sets of binoculars... ;)

*Blushes again* Aw, thank you very much. I'd say this was the best dragonfly photo I'd ever taken, and by some distance. I actually have an even closer-up one just of the head, and you can see the details of its complex eyes -- so brace yourself, as that does look quite alien!
