"A mercenary?"
Zhakrid had mixed feelings about taking a complete stranger along on the journey. Yes, it was true: the expedition was long and dangerous. What’s more, no one could say for certain exactly where the journey would lead. So it only made sense to improve their chances of success by having another person by their side. What worried Zhakrid, however, was this mercenary's motivation: money.
Kyralis assured her that Thakris was a professional. Zhakrid had got the same impression when she first met this so called "Paw for hire". Thakris had an impressive build. Muscular. A resolute, unwavering gaze. Not once did she take her eyes off the spear in her hand. Always vigilant. While listening to the plan, she barely blinked and maintained her steadfast gaze.
Thakris asked no unnecessary questions.
"One gold coin a day and my spear is yours. Not negotiable."
Zhakrid was surprised. Even she was aware of how ill-considered the whole undertaking was and how slim the chances of success were. But Thakris didn't seem to care. For her, it was just another job among many. As long as Thakris was paid, she would be loyal; perhaps even loyal to the death. Zhakrid couldn’t say for sure about the latter, but she wouldn't let it come to that. She had made it out of the Maguuma jungle unscathed, and she would survive this journey in one piece as well. And what was even more important: she would succeed.
The voice in her head, calling her south-west towards Kryta, grew louder again and urged her to set off.
"All right, let's go!"
