"Where, for the love of god, is she?"
The taur ranger Kyralis narrowed her eyes as she peered into the distance from the waist-high boulder. All that could be heard were the sounds of the Ascalonian forest. The wind whispered softly through the branches, blowing colourful leaves from the treetops. Not far from where she stood, a boar was rooting through the earth in search of food. Otherwise, all was quiet in the forest. There was still no sign of Zhakrid…
Kyralis sighed, half exhausted, half frustrated, as she continued to search the area for her missing friend. Zhakrid had always been rather peculiar. And it was true that she had disappeared for several days in the past. But this time, it was weeks, almost a whole month. Kyralis wasn’t the pessimistic type, but the signs were mounting that something had happened to Zhakrid. Before setting off into the distance, Zhakrid had simply said goodbye, adding that she was on a journey of self-discovery. That was all. No further explanations. No hint as to where the journey would take her.
Kyralis cursed under her breath. "Just wait till I get my hands on her…!"
"That sounds menacing. I hope you’re not talking about me."
Kyralis was so startled that she flinched and almost lost her grip on her bow. Glancing over her shoulder, she followed the voice, which she had instantly recognised as Zhakrids'. And indeed: the one they had thought lost had returned. Zhakrid was somewhat bedraggled from the long journey, her fur dishevelled and wild. But she seemed unharmed, as she was just standing there with a big grin on her face.
Kyralis hesitated. Relief. Frustration. Joy. And also a touch of embarrassment that Zhakrid had been able to sneak up on her so easily. The cocktail of emotions pressed against the lump in Kyralis' throat. Just as she was about to speak, Zhakrid cut her off.
"I've made a discovery. You'll be blown away."
