As for what's going on here, well, remember when Vegeta won the 43rd Arena? Weeeeell...seems that the breaking of his losing streak might have caused reality to start collapsing. Don't worry. I'm sure Whis can use his deus ex machina powers to fix this before it gets really bad.
Whatever happens, Frieza probably feels a sudden urge to restore balance in the universe by...I dunno, having Vegeta lose to another big bad that may or may not be himself or something just to restore the saiyan's status as 'jobber'.
