Imps & Sprites
Imps, Suppressed demons
Imps are the suppressed form of demons, appearing about the size of a house cat and sometimes with a similar personality. While they cannot talk or use magic (or very little), and are stripped down to their baser instincts and intelligence, they can still very well be nuisances. There are two types of imps: fledgling demons and suppressed adult demons.
Fledgling Demons
Newly born demons take the form of imps, and while they are easily dealt with alone, they tend to travel in packs.
They are easy to tell apart from their adult counterparts by their lack of distinguishing features. They almost all appear very similar, with dusty gray or red skin, small horns, wings and barbed tails, though there is still a small amount of variation between them in terms of eye colour, size, and general disposition. Even the best young imps are still mischief-makers however.
Suppressed Adult Demons
Mature demons that have turned into imps do so primarily as a safety mechanism, as adult imps are practically indestructible due to their incredible regenerative powers.
Demons can be forced to be imps by stronger demons or angels, or by being killed or their energy totally drained, or they can choose to transform into the form themselves. They cannot choose, however, then they turn back.
Imps will often seek a caretaker for themselves while they wait to regain their normal form, and will often be markedly better behaved for this caretaker than anyone else. This helps them feel more comfortable especially during more vulnerable states, such as sleeping, which they must do in this form to regain energy.
Adult imps are easy to spot due to the variety in their features. They may possess markings, different types of wings or tails, or entirely different base anatomies. Demons that take on an animal form may even appear similar to that form as an imp and can be mistaken for a young individual of that animal.
Sprites, Suppressed Angels
While imps can be easily compared to cats, sprites often appear similar (in size and features) to small birds of insects, and are the angelic equivalent to an imp. While also just as indestructible, sprites are much more vulnerable, as they remain intelligent and able to talk, but only have access to very weak magic or none at all, and are physically weak.
Like imps, their form can be diminished by a stronger angel or demon. They can be suppressed by a complete loss of energy or being near death. In addition, they can sprite themselves, and while it can be handy to be small, it is also very dangerous. A sprite that has suppressed itself can turn itself back with ease, with some exceptions. It is much easier to seal an angel in their sprite form than it is to suppress them in the first place.
Both angels and fallen angels become sprites when suppressed, and it can be easy to tell a fallen angel apart, because they are unable to fly. Sprited angels can still fly as long as they were able to before, but not necessarily as high or as fast.
Appearance-wise, sprites always appear humanoid and bipedal, without halos, and very small- usually 5-8 inches tall. They can have larger wings, exaggerated features, animal-like features (if they take on the form of an animal), and sport more fairy-like proportions, with larger eyes and heads and smaller bodies. Their clothes, regardless of what they wore normally, appear simpler and more classically angelic, with robes and tunics. Like anything angelic, no two sprites ever look the same.
