Emmet likes to give pep talks that he and Sully are partners. Just a wombat and a ferret against the world. Vanguards of all the science they don't understand (but they're still gonna make a buck off it).
Sully remembers those speeches each time he's dusting Emmet's furniture while the Boss naps in his recliner. And each time his paycheck arrives in the mail partially dissolved into gray goo, requiring him to race to the Burrow to spray for self-replicating nanobots (without disturbing the Boss's nap). And each time he, left to man the repair shop himself, thinks about not upselling a customer and immediately wakes the Boss from his nap because he triggered Emmet's sixth sense for money flying off the table. The "pep talk" that ensues from that sounds nothing like a partnership of equals!
Sure, Emmet can yell at Sully for giving a customer a refund because his phone exploded in direct sunlight but has no compunctions whatsoever about saying "Maurice's truck is on the fritz. Head up there and see what you can do about it."
Now to be fair: Emmet is nocturnal (hence all the daytime naps). Accordingly he dislikes working out in the sun. And despite Sully not typically making "house calls" it is often simpler to go to the location of a broken truck than have it towed in, especially since Sully himself likes to use the garage for other purposes. So all things being equal, heading out to Maurice's farm was a task for the ferret.
But... come on. It's Maurice. He doesn't know what's going on. He's the one person in the world Sully might actually feel comfortable scamming, if only because it seems he won't learn to look out for himself until he gets completely fleeced. But no. He's Emmet's "best customer" (and a test subject of compelling promise) so it's important to toss a "freebie" his way every now and then.
"Freebie" meaning Sully doesn't even know if he's getting paid for this.
It would be one thing if the ram did something to help. Hand Sully his tools, do something other than laze around guzzling beer all day!
But Maurice can't understand why Sully's being so touchy. He is trying to help! The harder you work, the more important it is to take frequent breaks!
Sully's a nice kid but he does seem like a workaholic. He really needs to learn to take it easy now and then.
