I don't like to see poor Gem all embarrassed because I feel bad for her ... but I guess that means the story has made her a character I care about. Also showing her doing this gives more depth to her personality.
Rule of Diaper Buying #1: 99% of the people you'll run into won't even notice what you're buying.
Rule #2: 99% of those who notice won't care.
Rule #3: Sure, the tiny fraction who notice and care will probably assume it's for you, so why bother?
Rule #4: Making up a lame story will only call more attention to yourself.
Taking a step back from painful personal experience though, this is actually pretty funny. :)

I got this funny story where I actually went into the store and bought a pack of Depends. The lady at the counter and I had a conversation for about 5 minutes or so about me joining the rewards program. She didn't really care what I was buying or who I was buying it for. Keep in mind every day people come in and buy the exact same thing as you. You are not anyone special or unique. Just a face in the crowd. I hope that helps some.
You say that now. It's a bit unnerving every time because there is so much going on in your head. Just remember to stay calm and collected. If you act like something is wrong, people will be inclined to believe something is. And if you're too nervous and can't be calm...fake it. That's the extent of my help on that subject. i always HATED checkout. (from when i was 14 till now i had to buy my diapers on over the weekend school field trips and sneek them past 70 classmates, 3 roommates and 7 chaparones) torture was having to explain... my last excuse was i was buying them to prank the teacher. XD
