Between the Runes
-I made this based on a dream I had and I'm finally bringing it to life, hope you like it, any feedback is welcome as I'm not very confident in my writing.-
Autumn pushed it's way past summer and the days curled up earlier revealing a long stretch of night. The leaves danced across the misty forest paths when the breeze cooed its way over the hills. Dyveke stood sihloutted against the window of the palace, sleek and tall in form. The early morning sun peeking though thrown against the floor. Malvi turned her head toward the figure standing next to her window sill and yawned.
"Oh, you're up? Did I wake you?"
"Nah, the sun was in my face, what are you doing in here?" Malvi stretched her wings, stepped off of her perch and walked toward Dyveke.
Malvi stared up at her tilting her head. "I-I wanted to see you, I'm sorry. I know you're going to be so busy today so we may not be able to talk and we won’t get to hang out until this evening." Dyveke took a step back and hung her head. Malvi hugged her and buried her face into her breast. "Well you should go and start count, I've got to get ready. We have forever together soon, love."
Dyveke wrapped her wings around Malvi like a blanket, sighing, “You’re right, I’ll see you this evening.” Malvi hopped over to where her gowns hung. She sifted through them, her feathers fluffed up from the chill of the morning. Meanwhile Dyveke passed through her chamber door, looking back at her for but a moment. Dyveke headed down the banner strewn hall to the courtyard. Walking toward her soldiers standing in a row to take attendance of the guards.
Being Captain of the guard was rewarding it was definitely something Dyveke enjoyed. The guards she commanded respected her and valued her thoughts. Dyveke was a fair and loyal soldier as how it should be, appointed by the King himself. Day guarding was the most important of the jobs so only the best were assigned to day duties. “Now that we know everyone is here...” Dyveke peers down at the scroll in her talons, “Staffan, you will lead the patrol today. Adrian, Malkom, Agata, and Jabari, you will go with Staffan. I better not hear of any trouble, you know this evening is very important to me.” Dyveke’s round amber eyes bore into Staffan’s, Staffan glanced to Malkom annoyed and nodded. With that the guards went to take their positions around the tribe’s castle. The street guards took to the paths between the owls of the kingdom’s homes and Staffan’s patrol took to the sky.
Dyveke turned back to the palace making her way to her quarters where she will get some much-needed sleep.
Elsewhere Princess Malvi was with her father in the dining room. They were finishing up the final touches of her pre-wedding dinner. The tables were set with the most elegant wood carved dishes, in place of her kingdom’s red banners, white ones hung. The archway draped with the freshest forget-me-nots and Iris’. The ballroom floor prepped for the evening the ceiling hung with lanterns. Among the beach a bunch of driftwood stacked near where the bonfire was to be had. Everything was ready here aside from dinner, Malvi was somewhat at a loss thinking had to be perfect. Of course, she ordered something different, an array of sushi, but as a backup she did order some mice just in case.
“Your mother would be proud of you, you know?” her father said thoughtfully as he looked across the room. “She would be so proud of the owl you’ve become.” Though Malvi was not actually related to her mother or father you wouldn’t know it from the way she acted.
She was quite small and looked very different from them. She hardly knew her mother but what moments she remembers with her she treasured. “I appreciate that, father. I miss her quite a lot.”
Her father sat there with her a moment before making his way toward the throne room to complete his morning duties. Malvi turned, pleased with the room, and went back upstairs
