Time for a "railwayfurs"-themed photo. Here's the sweet (pun intended) ex-British Sugar shunter* D2960 Silver Spoon (built by Ruston & Hornsby at Lincoln in 1950) busily at work at Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway. In spite of the British Railways logo, this little engine was never a BR locomotive, passing directly from British Sugar to SVR hands in 1983.

What is with the truck with the clackbox in the middle? Sort of a scale test car?

No idea, to be honest. It's GWR, so must be pre-1947 and therefore not actually to do with the shunter.

It's a shunters truck, they were coupled to the engines to allow the shunters(staff rather than locomotive type) to ride on them around the yards safely, the box contained shunters poles for coupling and uncoupling of vehicles, scotches and other tools.

What they use it for? Well, the title "D2960 shunting at Kidderminster" may perhaps provide a little clue: they use it for shunting. =;)

Ah, I see. Well, shunting is (basically) shoving carriages etc around a yard so that they're ready to be attached to a locomotive. So in this pic, the engine is shunting that coach on the left. I don't know what the little thing behind it is, though.
