I wrote this article on Alexander Calder a few years ago. An important Modernist craftsman, Calder played with many art forms, from sculptures and mobiles, for which he was particularly famous, to his jewelry. The circus was a particularly strong inspiration for him. Using loops, spirals, and straight flanges of brass and silver wire, his work has a playful nature.
