The Ptero is a common avian monster that dwells in spotted concentrations all over the lands of Taeryn.

-Pteros have no eyes; they rely on the other four senses, especially sound and smell, to navigate and hunt.
-The beak of the Ptero is very thick and backed with a tremendous biting power. While it has incredible biting strength, the muscles it uses to open its mouth are weak by comparison. While the bite of a ptero can potentially break bone, it can easily have its mouth bound with a simple cord.
-Pteros are omnivorous, and will hunt down smaller prey as well as consume fruit, seeds, and carrion, depending on the availability of a food source. Most species stick to their favorite meals unless they are unavailable.
-Pteros have specialized wings that can launch sharpened modified feathers as projectiles. While relatively small, they can be numerous, and can easily subdue a prey if many of them reach their target. Some Ptero have specialized feathers that can carry a toxin to poison, or even turn a target to stone.
-While some Ptero have elemental names, such as the Lava Ptero, the name only refers to their coloring, and for the most part do not have any reference to any sort of resistance to that particular element. Lava Ptero burn quite readily, and Seaside Ptero are susceptible to drowning.
-Ptero have large, oversized claws and talons that allow them to grip and scratch at prey in close quarters. They can be quite lethal, and a Ptero can carry up to twice its body weight for a short distance.
-The elongated tailfeathers act as a balance for Ptero flight, and are sought after by merchants for use in manufacture of stylish clothing and hats.
