Why have a cross for an iris? I honestly think that the design is biologically possible with just as many downsides as circular, horizontally or vertically oriented eyes. I just found my original sketch of this idea.

Divergent and harsh weather conditions driving phenotypical changes. The sciences behind warp travel was not rediscovered and held until several thousand generations later. Occasionally functional ancient tech was discovered, used or studied to destructive but unrevealing means. Knowledge lost and held secret, at least not until the 4th and current galactic age. Or so they thought."
