It's Spooky Month! Last year I did a bunch of classic horror story characters as pokemon: Count Dracula, Victor Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, etc...
I decided I wanted to do something like that again this year but with a little twist. First of all, instead of horror I decided to go a different direction capturing another side of Halloween: Fun (with some scariness mixed in)
This year the theme is Fairytales.
I had an idea I wanted to explore:
These pokemon are NOT meant to be taken as the characters from their respective fairy tales, these are kids who are wearing costumes that allow them to embody the story for which they are dressed as and gain abilities associated with their character/story, so a character might not just be the character who they resemble but a culmination of the entire story, and stories can be very powerful!
Mary Jane embodies the spirit of the story Peter Pan
The original story of Peter Pan is actually kind of creepy and the character of Peter comes off a child-sociopath. He is actually much younger in the novel that he is depicted in the Disney film mean spirited in the sort of way you would expect from a child who was never taught how to behave or be mindful of others. He even actively rejects any sort of character growth, choosing to forget friends once they are no longer immediately relevant to him rather than introspect, change his ways, or grow up.
Peter shows up at the Darling residents to listen in on the mother Mary Darling telling bedtime stories to her children through the open window, and it's implied he stole Mary off to Neverland when she was a child just as he's going to do to Wendy, and in the epilogue will do again to Wendy's daughter Jane, perpetuating a cycle of Darling daughters being kidnapped to be his mother.
Ironically he does not actually like or trust real mothers. He describes how he tried to find his birth mother once only to find that she now had a new baby and was jealous. Later when he is forced to bring the Darling children home, he tries to fly ahead and put bars on their bedroom window to make them think their parents had rejected them so he could keep the kids for as long as he wants. The Darlings offer Peter to stay with them but he rejects being adopted fearing that they are gonna make him grow up.
