It's Spooky Month! Last year I did a bunch of classic horror story characters as pokemon: Count Dracula, Victor Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, etc...
I decided I wanted to do something like that again this year but with a little twist. First of all, instead of horror I decided to go a different direction capturing another side of Halloween: Fun (with some scariness mixed in)
This year the theme is Fairytales.
I had an idea I wanted to explore:
These pokemon are NOT meant to be taken as the characters from their respective fairy tales, these are kids who are wearing costumes that allow them to embody the story for which they are dressed as and gain abilities associated with their character/story, so a character might not just be the character who they resemble but a culmination of the entire story, and stories can be very powerful!
Faxinir embodies the spirit of the character Prince Lancelot du Lac of the Arthurian Legends.
Lancelot, probably one of the most famous knights of the Round table, was not actually an original part of the Arthurain legends but a character created by French author and poet Chrétien de Troyes inserted into the Arthurian canon as it was being formed.
Lancelot is a lost French Prince, the classic archetypal White Knight, "Strongest, and most Handsome of all of King Arthur's Knights" who is also engaged in a secret courtly love affair with King Arthur's wife Guinevere behind Arthur's back while he is away fighting battles. He was raised by the Lady of the Lake in her Fairy Kingdom, only obtaining his name when he overtook an impenetrable fortress by himself and defeated it's evil lord.
He also managed to stop the conquest of a half giant king that Arthur couldn't deal with, who refused a crown or kingdom till he had defeated King Arthur and was only stopped when he was so impressed by Lancelot's skill in battle and handsomeness, so he decided he would rather be his best friend (and maybe also bromantic partner) as a new member of the round table.
Yeah so Lancelot is basically Chretien's self insert OC who became wildly popular and infamous. Chretien was inspired by the the French concept of Courtly romance, a tragic sort of affair where too people who are in love pine for each other from afar without able to make moves toward each other. It was originally popular in Arabic romance and came back to Europe by the Crusaders.
Then as Lancelot spread, not everybody liked his ongoing affair with Guinevere and more Christian elements were gradually being added to Arthurian canon like the holy part of the Holy Grail which was originally just a grail. Without the context of how Courtly love is never meant to go anywhere it started to turn into straight up adultery, as well as the reason for the fall of Camelot when Arthur discovers the secret love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere and is too busy trying to hunt down Lancelot while the traitor Knight Mordred takes over Arthur's throne behind his back.
