I do not upload stories often, but I wanted to share a story I made for my last year's English class. I have had this story in my head for a while, but I never actually wrote about it. Halloween extra credit was being offered to write a short story, so I took the opportunity to write a short story based on this idea - ProtoFurs. The backstory is described in the beginning of the story so that you can have some type of background information.
Enjoy!
Protofurs: Halloween Special
Book 1 (Side-story)
Background Information
This story takes place on a huge island (About the size of the California Bay Area) called Fur-Island. The shape of the island is a paw print (The main middle island, and three smaller islands north of the mainland). The land is populated with anthropomorphic animals (Often referred to as furries in the land), and protogens.
History: Fur-Island used to be a place where furries and protogens were living in peace. The main languages of the land are English and Animalang. The capital of the land was the middle small island north of the mainland called Nachaedal. The leaders of the entire land were a furry and a protogen. The both of them were in charge of the whole land and the five Gems, which were to be used to help advantage everyone.
One day, the two leaders were arguing about who was more superior, furries or protogens, although the cause of the argument was unknown. Word spread and all the inhabitants of the land were also arguing on the same topic. A civil war was caused because of it between the furries and the protogens, and in the end, no one won. The land was split down in the middle. The western side, now called Anthrona, belongs to the furries. The eastern side, now called Protoched, belongs to the protogens. Nachaedal was abandoned and the other two small islands to the sides are the capitol to the two sides.
Nowadays: Around 200 years have passed by, and the land is still split. Both sides are living their own ways and try not to bother each other. Though, a few mini wars happened during the 200 years.
One day, four adolescents, two from Protoched and two from Anthrona, secretly snuck into Nachaedal (Now old and abandoned). Together, they found the abandoned palace and found where the five Gems were supposed to be.
Currently, they are trying to find the five Gems to see if that would do anything. So at agreed times, they meet up on the island to search for the Gems. Granted sometimes they could argue, especially because they come from two different sides, but their friendship grows more as they continue.
“Where are they?” asked Youthim.
Youthim, the blue protogen, and Reasaul, the red protogen, were at the abandoned middle island of the land that is full of trees. They waited for Taily, the pink anthro, and Furtaí, the green anthro.
Reasual shrugged. “How am I supposed to know? You should know me.”
“You are never any help. How are we friends again?” said Youthim.
“8th grade”
“Ah yes…”
Half an hour ran by and the sun was beginning to settle down. The wind grew slightly and neither Taily nor Furtaí could be seen yet.
Reasaul and Youthim laid on the grass, and looked up at the falling leaves.
“They forgot about how we’re supposed to meet up,” A leaf fell on Reasul’s face and he swatted it away. “I’m pretty sure of it.”
“No no! They…” Youthim thought for a moment. “Yeah…they probably did.”
“Should we head back?” suggested Reasaul.
“I guess so.”
As they got back up, a rustling bush nearby alarmed Youthim. He walked slowly towards the bush, with Reasual trailing behind. Nerves struck him with sweaty hands and weak legs as he and Reasaul progressed towards the bush.
Youthim pushed Reasaul in front of him. “You go on ahead!”
“Why me?!” exclaimed Reasual.
“You’re the stronger one!”
“Well yes but–”
“Don’t even try making an excuse,” judged Youthim. “You are bad at making excuses.”
Reasaul looked around and picked up a big stick on the ground and held it above the bush. Quickly he uncovered a bush and found nothing. “Huh?”
“There’s nothing?” said Youthim walking up to Reasual’s side. “Nothing!”
“I guess it was nothing,” said Reasaul.
When they turned around, Taily was right in front of them. “Boo!”
“Ah!” Both Reasaul and Youthim immediately felt frightened. Youthim fall backwards into the bush. Reasual, on the other hand, hit the pink anthropomorphic cat on the side with the stick he was still holding.
“Ow!” exclaimed Taily. “What did you do that for!?”
“What do you think! You scared the RAM out of us! You’re lucky I did not use my claws!
“Well it’s Halloween and I wanted to scare you to celebrate it!” said Taily.
Youthim struggled to get out of the bush. “Thanks for the help,” he said sarcastically. “By the way, where is Furtaí? He is not going to come out of nowhere too right?!”
“Of course not, you know him,” she pointed to Furtaí walking up from behind her. “He’s right there.”
The green anthropomorphic wolf had his headphones on and was typing on his phone. He eventually took off the headphones and put away the phone. “Hey ya’ll” Furtaí said in greeting.
Youthim, Reasaul, Taily, and Furtaí head to the abandoned palace, and they walk up to the middle of the throne room. The throne room had eerie dark areas and many cobwebs. Dust filled the room, which had only been visible through the only source of light which came from the windows. They revealed the cylindrical stone with five spherical spaces with the button on the side of the throne room. Two of the five spaces had already been filled with bright, shining gems: a blue gem, and a green gem.
“We already achieved the Gravity Gem and the Elemental Gem,” said Taily. “What should we try to go for next?”
“How about the Size Gem?” suggested Youthim, pointing at the space with the words in Animalang (khOwAb Yd golku)
“The Size Gem?” questioned Furtaí. “What does that do, change our height?”
“I assume so,” Taily said. “Let’s see what the clue says.”
Taily pressed down into the Size Gem space.
Words formed on a wall above the four thrones. The words formed in Animalang, a common second language of the Islands.
“What does it say?” asked Reasaul.
Taily went up to the inscribed words. “It says…
‘Alk khOwAb Yd golku
Alk laa leth khOwAb Yd kha
jupathkhata EnUs pIl Esar Yd Alk jakhEb
YedE pa Atsbuu nasu khOak’.”
“And what does that mean?” asked Reasaul.
“You did not take Animalang class yet?” asked Taily.
“They barely offer Animalang classes on our side!” exclaimed Reasaul.
“Actually they offer them often,” Youthim corrected.
“Okay fine, so maybe I just don’t want to learn the language. I have you and Youthim translate it to English!” said Reasaul defensively. “Speaking of translating, can one of you please translate it for me and…” He glanced at Furtaí who was on his phone and with his headphones on. “Furtaí!! Pay attention!” he shouted.
Furtaí looked up from his phone and took off his headphones. “Sorry,” he said embarrassingly.
“Anyways…” said Youthim. “What it translates to is…
‘The Size Gem
The third Gem out of five
Located Northwest from the island
Find a tree with a hole'.”
“So we go northwest from here?” asked Furtaí.
“From what I heard, yeah,” said Reasaul.
“Wait a minute,” said Taily, stopping Reasaul and Furtaí as they were about to leave. “Don’t you remember what the area is like? It’s the most dense area on the island.”
“That’s right,” affirmed Youthim. “And the sun is going down, won’t it be too dark?”
The room had become silent except for the breeze outside. Reasaul broke the silence. “Well we are going. We are here together now, let’s not waste the chance.”
“Alright,” said Taily as they all went out. “But, I feel like this is an idea we will regret.”
They arrived at the edge of the dense forest and saw an old message in Animalang inscribed on a tree. “What does that say?” asked Furtaí.
Taily took a closer look at the message. “It says to beware of mysterious occurrences in the forest.”
“What occurrences?” asked Reasaul.
“It doesn’t say,” answered Taily. “We should stay alert and aware of our surroundings from here on out.”
They entered into the dense forest. So far, no sound came except for the wind bothering the leaves of the trees, and the crunching of the leaves stepped on by their paws.
“This is not so bad,” said Reasaul confidently. “See, I told you that this is not a bad idea.”
Taily glanced at Reasaul. “Just keep alert.”
They walked on for ten minutes.
“This forest is bigger than I thought,” said Reasaul. He noticed that no wind rustled the trees nor leaves. The trees grew triple their original size, possibly bigger. The sky darkened to a deep black with no stars in sight. “Where is that tree with the hole?”
No one answered.
“Guys?” Reasaul looked around and noticed that he was alone. “Hey!!” shouted Reasaul. “Stop joking around! I thought we’re taking this seriously!”
No one answered yet. He kept shouting continuously.
“Is that you Reasaul?!” shouted a voice. “It’s me! Youthim! Where are you!?”
Reasaul heard Youthim’s shout, but there was no clear direction from where it came from. It only sounded like a constant echo from all sides.
“I don’t know!” shouted Reasaul in reply. “I’m lost, surrounded by endless rows of tall trees! What about you?!”
“The same!”
“Are Taily and Furtaí with you!?”
“No! Where are they?!”
“Youthim, Reasaul, Taily! Where are you!?” shouted Furtaí.
“Me and Youthim are here, but just lost!” shouted Reasaul. “Can you figure where you are?!” he asked.
“I don’t know!” Furtaí shouted back. “I am surrounded by trees, and a bunch of long grass!”
“Long grass!” Reasaul said to himself. “Stay where you are!” he shouted to Furtaí. “Youthim and I will try to find you!”
“We will?!” shouted Youthim. “Won’t we get lost?! And what about Taily?!”
“We will try to find Taily once we get to Furtaí. As for getting to Furtaí, I guess it will just be the hardest game of Marco Polo!”
“Hey guys!” shouted Taily. “Where are you!” Taily could not find nor hear Youthim, Reasaul, and Furtaí. “I knew this was a bad idea. Why is Reasaul never thinking of the consequences.” Taily continued walking through the forest. “Maybe if I keep walking forward, I might find the end of the forest. Hopefully they are doing the same.”
The night took over the light of day, with no stars in sight, nor the moon. Making the forest incredibly dark. No sounds produced except for the steps of Taily.
She continued walking for fifteen minutes. “This is useless, I am getting no progress at all.”
“Maybe because you are walking in circles,” said a voice.
“Who goes there?!” said Taily, startled.
No one responded.
“I said who goes there!”
A bushed rustled open to reveal a bright small wolf. It had no hind legs, but rather floated as if a ghost.
“Who….Who are you?” asked Taily, slowly walking up to the creature.
It spoke saying, “My name is Max. I am the Wolf Spirit.”
“Wait wait, what do you mean the Wolf Spirit.”
“Well, it’s complicated, but I am a part of a group of animal spirits that give humans the power to transform into animals.”
“Humans?” Taily asked.
“There are different worlds in the universe other than this world. There is one full of these creatures called humans. They are like you but hairless and somewhat different anatomy.”
“Weird. Where are you from exactly? And why are you here?”
“Where I’m from is…complicated. Although, I am here because I am just exploring through here, then I heard your shouting.”
“Do you know how to get out of here? Or at least how to figure out some paths through here?” asked Taily hopefully.
“Well I could try to lead you out of this forest myself, since explaining is difficult,” said Max. “Follow me!”
They started traveling to a different direction through the forest than what Taily was originally traveling. Both did not speak for a while mainly because Taily was trying to be alert to find her friends and look for the tree with the hole.
“So is it just you?” asked Max. “Or are there more with you?”
“Why do you ask?”
“You seem like you are looking for something or someone.”
“Oh! Yeah, I came with three others. One is an anthro like me, and the other two are protogens.”
“Alright. This is probably none of my business, but why are you all here? You do know the dense forest is a place to not be in, even though it’s abandoned, right?” asked Max.
“Oh we all know, but we are looking for something that is said to be in here.”
“Where you got the location info is a trusted source? Whoever said that could be lying,” said Max amusingly.
“We trust it all right.” said Taily with confidence. Taily then grew curious. “This group of animal spirits that you belong to. Is it a small group or a big group?”
Max glanced at her.
“Only if you want to answer!” Taily said embarrassingly. “I never should have asked!” she said to herself.
“Oh no! It’s fine!” said Max, chuckling a bit. “The group of animal spirits is a small group. Including me, there are five. I am the Wolf. The others are the Cat, the Tarantula, the Chameleon, and the Octopus.”
He continued on saying, “Each spirit represents an animal species for the heroes.”
“So if I am correct,” said Taily. “The species that correspond to the animal spirits are canine, feline, insects, reptiles, and aquatic creatures?”
“Yes! That is correct.”
“But who are these heroes you mentioned?” asked Taily.
“Well, it’s a bit of a long story but–”
Distant shouting was heard by Taily. “Wait wait! Do you hear that?” Both Taily and Max perked up their ears to hear carefully.
The shouting was heard again. “Taily!” said the voice. “Where are you!”
“Who are those shouting?” asked Max.
“That’s Youthim’s voice! My friends can’t be that far from here!”
The distant shouting continued. Max started traveling to the direction of the shouting. “Follow me! I believe I know where they are!”
Taily ran behind Max as he led the way through the forest. The forest started to include more grassy areas as they got closer to the shouting voices. “Taily! Where are you!” called Youthim.
“I can hear you! I am coming!” Taily shouted back.
The grass got longer as Max and Taily got closer to the group. “I don’t remember the grass being long here last time I was here,” wondered Max to himself.
They continued running then Max stopped. Taily could not stop in time and bumped into Furtaí and fell down.
“Ow!” exclaimed Furtaí.
“Taily!” exclaimed Youthim as he helped Taily get back up. “You’re back!”
“Well I couldn’t have done it alone,” said Taily as she signaled her tail to Max.
Youthim, Reasaul, and Furtaí came up to Max. “Who…er…what are you?” asked Reasaul.
“My name is Max. I am the wolf animal Spirit.”
“Wolf animal Spirit?” asked Youthim.
“We can explain it to you later,” said Taily. “But first, we must find a way out of here!”
“But what about the tree with the hole?” said Reasaul.
Taily was about to argue, but Max interrupted her. “Is that what you’re looking for? The tree with the hole in this forest?” All four of the group nodded. Max laughed a bit, “It’s right behind you!”
They looked to the tree behind. Furtaí walked to the other side of the tree. “He’s right! It’s here!”
They went to the other side of the tree and saw in the hole of the tree a yellow, spherical gem. “This is it!” exclaimed Youthim. “The Size Gem!”
“Gem?!” Max said with curiosity.
“Yeah! Is there anything wrong?” asked Reasaul.
Max thought for a second. “No…nothing.” He shook off the worries.
Taily admired the Gem, but noticed something off. “Hold on, the Gem is brighter than usual. Is it activated?”
Youthim tried deactivating the Gem and suddenly, the trees got to normal size and the grass got shorter. “I think the forest was big and dense, because we were small this whole time once we entered the forest!”
“Yeah!” said Taily. “And I think the closer we were, the more it affected us!”
“Well, we got the Size Gem now at least,” said Reasaul. “Let’s take it back to the abandoned palace.”
