Although Chimerae occur naturally most are created through magic to serve whoever created them, but when their master dies or is defeated Chimerae are left without purpose and either wither away in the dungeon or keep they were created in since most adventurers don't see them as anything more than mindless monsters. While this is often true some Chimerae are intelligent enough to figure out they are free, but lacking any purpose they will look for a new master or vanish into the wildernis to find other Chimerae tribes. Some end up in cities where they are shunned and barely tolerated and they have to survive by begging for coin and scraps of food or resort to catching rats to eat.
