Another duck photo tonight: this is a female Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) touching down on the River Severn. I have any number of similar shots that are blurred, or just too early, or just too late, or with boring water patterns, or... well, you get the idea. This one didn't work too badly, though! Some of the patterns on top of the ripples look a little unnatural, but they're real: they're reflections both of the quayside and of other birds (mostly gulls) that were flying around at the time.

Thanks! It's easier in some ways taking these photos on lakes, but rivers do have more interesting water shapes thanks to the current. As far as the water goes, I wuldn't recommend anyone (except a duck!) actually swim in it; the Severn has all sorts of hidden currents and sadly it claims lives most years. But the banks are certainly a very pleasant place to stop and rest for a few minutes.
Thanks! The lighting helps enormously, since with a compact it's really the only way I can get a decently fast shutter speed while keeping ISO low enough to avoid unpleasant noise. This was taken today (meaning Sunday) and it was the first truly sunny day for nine days. We're not having a good summer, even by British standards!
