[SMAUGUST DAY 2] Whistle
Say hello to the Firemane or Singing Drake!
Found in the southwestern portions of South America, including parts of Peru to the southern-most reaches of Patagonia they are a small but vibrant dracifomra. Males in particular are known to have deep red iridescent manes that brighten up in the summer and fall, where their first common name comes from. The other common name they have is a nod toward a feature both sees have, a horn like resonating chamber on their skulls.
In males the color of this formation does brighten up with color, while it keeps a bone cream coloration in females and immature males. But the chamber does allow them to "sing" to each other. Some report the songs sound like elephant rumblings and whale songs, a near full body feeling. The resonating chambers are used throughout the year by these drakes, though more colorful calls can be heard during mating season.
The current ICUN status of this drake species is unfortunately Vulnerable due to the color of the males males in both breeding and nonbreeding seasons as well as the nature of their resonating chambers.
