PART # Destiny Calls-=-I don't really hold it against Tofu and Zwei for ignoring my gut instincts on going to the shop. There was so mucch to do and see at the convention and so little time. At least, that's what we had believed. If we had known what we knew now, we would have taken advantage of the situation and tried everything while we were still around to appreciate it. If I were still me, I would greatly miss the chance of being able to participate in conventions.
So, we got our hotel rooms and settled ourselves in. While the cost was a pretty sum, each of us felt it was better to rent out private hotel rooms. I took a bit of extra time lying out on the enormous bed for myself. It was nice to have so much space for just one person. Part of me did question how large the bed was and most of the furniture. It was as if they were made with bigger people in mind. But then being someone who was known for rolling off his bed at times, at least I would have more room to spread myself out.
By the time I was done with my hotel room, Tofu and Zwei were already gone and exploring things on their own. They at least had the courtesy to text me where they were going. I didn't care. I'd tell them I'd catch up with them later, maybe. I was more than interested in checking out that shop that we had decided to skip out on. I don't know why--something in my gut told me it was worth checking out.
It would seem that the advertisements for the shop were louder and more impressive than the shop itself. Nothing entirely special beyond a large stack of specially decorated boxes with question marks and glyphs taken from the monster hunter series. Hanging overhead the table was a sign that read "Mystery MH Mon Loot Boxes" and on a back wall were plushies of the more popular monsters, with photos and banners of people showing off Monster Hunter Cosplay outfits. All monster themed. There was no line at all. It was weird but nothing conspicuous.
Standing behind a long table with prices was a woman...or at least who I could only assume was a woman. Though she was dressed very casually, it was hard to tell who could it be underneath what was yet another impressive cosplay outfit. This one, however, resembled the cat-bird-like wyvern people called a nargacuga, with wings too small for flight against her arms. Her eyes were not the fierce feral ones either but round and affectionate. She stood well at least twice my height. If she was on stilts, she did a very good job balancing herself.
Her lips(?) pulled into a smile as she bowed curtly. "Greetings! Can I help you? You seem very lost."
Well, that was a woman all right, I thought. She's got the voice for sure. Strangely carried well for a suit. "Well, I took noticed of your signs and seems interested in your wares..."
"Oh, yes. We have all kinds of thing. We have plushes, miniatures, t-shirts, even some props for anyone liking to hunt..." The shopkeep winked as she twirled behind, giving me a shot of her waving tail. It was thick and waved behind her as if alive. Grabbing a box she showed it off to me. "These are our most popular item. They're Mystery Loot boxes! There's no telling what you'll find inside and each has a special trinket to wear. They're only ten dollars!"
She then took a box and pulled it open carefully, then pulled out something on a chord. It was a silvered jewel piece eteched with wing patterns and glyphs, centered with an opaque, smooth stone, swirling with black and blue. Having played enough Monster Hunter games, I recognized it quickly.
"That's a kinship stone, isn't it?" I asked her. "I played Monster Hunter Stories."
"That's right!" She said excitedly, putting it back in the box. "They each have a special unique stone in them, each one based on a monster from the game."
"Oh, that's neat! And you said they were only ten?" My eyes widened. At a convention, such a low price was often a steal. "And you still have that many?"
"Yes well..." The shopkeep's ears lowered as she smiled awkwardly. "Strangely not attracting that much interest..."
That's when I felt my heart go soft at the news. When I was a lot younger, I would be heartbroken over not being able to sell more chocolate candy than the other kids in my local band. I knew exactly just as she felt. So I pulled out some money and handed it up to her. "I'll take three!"
Her ears perked right up as she
After handing both them a box, Arin himself purchased one off her as well and then asked. "There's something else. You have any t-shirts that are double X?"
"Oh? Well, we only sell triple X..." The shopkeeper unfurled an example shirt depicting a monster. "We've got a few fifty kind of these, though. These are about eighten USD each."
"Okay, I'll take three of those annnd a um...that stygian zinogre and mizutsune plushie over there."
This was enough of a sale that it actually made the shopkeeper's tail start waving happily. It looked as if she'd knock over some of her own merchandise if she wasn't careful. After stashing it in a large bag, she bowed to me excitedly. "Thank you very much! I know you'll like these! Come back if you want to get anything else. Tell your friends, too!"
"Oh, don't worry, I will!" I promised her as I walked off. I cringed internally. Admittedly, that was more spending than I had intended. Still it was nice see her so happy. That tail was something else. It was moving too much for it to be a prop, but there was no way it was real. People didn't have tails, and there certainly weren't monsters from the game that hawked merchandise.
...Or did they~?
