Autumn, 1326
Logan and Mera descended from the Rim of the World, carefully following the steep and rocky trail as it ran along the narrow spine of ridgetops, crossed through talus fields and stunted pine forests, climbed back up over saddles, and descended into narrow canyons surrounded by towering walls. Eventually the dragon, with the human upon his back, slid down a steep embankment then clambered his way around a rocky promontory- trying to retain a grip upon the loose slate rubble- and came upon a sheer cliff face. Arrayed before them, framed by lush tree-covered mountains in the distance, was a great exposed dolomite pillar, thousands of feet tall and seemingly sculpted into the forms of two gigantic humanoids. The companions paused to marvel at the sight.
The towering monoliths dominated the edge of the mountain range, a pair of atlases frozen as though petrified mid-movement. Grey stone, smoothed by wind and rain cascaded like frozen waterfalls from the heavens. Trees the size of hummingbird feathers clung to cavities of the rocks, and flocks of true avians hovering around suggested roosts atop the stone. All around it the rocky embankment broke away in jagged edges of rock, rapidly descending into the swirling mists below.
“The Giants of Giant’s Pass.” Logan nodded. “Glib says that it’s just two more days’ journey to enter the forest.”
The dragon cocked his head sideways. “It looks like a large human couple there. Can’t say I’ve ever noticed before.”
“Giants.” Logan corrected.
“Giants?”
“Humans, but really large and not quite human. They live in the mountains and eat people.”
Mera raised an eyebrow. “You mean like trolls?”
“Well, more human than trolls, who are more like goblins and Other Men.”
“Can’t say I’ve ever seen them.”
Now it was Logan’s turn to be surprised. “You haven’t?”
“Should I?”
“You live in the mountains and never met them? Are they real?”
“I don’t know.” Mera pointed to the unique monolith in the distance. “Are they supposed to be made of rocks?”
“Glib says that the Giants were once a pair of lovers who renounced their evils and violence in order to live peacefully with each other. However their peaceful ways angered the other giants, who tried to attack them and pursued them to this spot. By the intervention of the Heavens these giants were turned to stone, so as to be forever together in peace.”
“Huh.” The dragon scratched his neck. “What kind of story is that?”
Logan shrugged. “One of hope and mercy and salvation?”
Mera snorted. “Get turned to stone? Great.”
The dragon abruptly turned and continued down towards the forested slopes below. “I've never met the Sabines either. If they're real, tell me our story will turn out better than being forever rocks.”
The hunter held on tightly for the bumpy descent. “We’ll sort things out without praying to the Heavens, I guess.”
“Good plan.”

As always, I have to go to work, which I can't stand, and you have such beauty in the morning. Your talent is inspiring, and even in the worst of moping, it saves the day. That statue reminds me of something from Lord of the Rings. But then again, maybe it's my coincidence, haha.
