The cathedral of Notre Dame, a place of worship for many humans, but for the gargoyles it was a place they could call home. They had been carved by the church in order to ward off evil, despite also being representations of evil. They were carved alongside stone chimeras and “grotesques” as they were called. Each stone handcrafted with love and care, though none so much as the gargoyles. Brought into this world to ward off evil they were granted life through a mixture of dormant magic in the area, being built on holy ground with the will of the church, and the passion of the stone carver whose love for his art imparted it with a fraction of soul.
Their life however wasn't noticed in the daylight pouring through the windows as gargoyles freeze up in direct sunlight, going into a sleep-like state if it hits their full body. Only waking once the sun goes down. Though most of the gargoyles were content to stay in place and so their duty of warding off evil. Beryl however was not.
Beryl hated being cramped up all day on the cathedral,so come nightfall she would usually wander around the city, watching the humans who were blissfully unaware of her presence in the night sky. Occasionally skulking around and listening in on conversations through windows to get an idea of what was going on in the world. But no group of humans interested her more than the street punks who wrote blasphemy on the churches walls. They disliked the authority the church held over the matters of humans, and they especially hated the lack of punishment for greed within the church. Something which she resonated with seeing as she was occasionally there to hear late night deals in the chapel. Especially deals to cleanse people of their sins for money. But there wasn't much she could do, eventually deciding to rebel in her limited capacity.
She observed the “blasphemers” every night until one day she noticed that they left behind some paint. Looking around a bit before swooping down and grabbing it. Thus beginning a new run of blasphemy around town that nobody could ever catch. Not that she let her fellow gargoyles know. They were already annoyed by her leaving every night after all.
As the years went on and humanity evolved beryl eventually traded out her normal paints for spray cans and her blasphemy for graffiti. It spoke to her much more after all. And during one late night escapade the cops nearly caught her, forcing her to fly to the woods nearby. And as she flew over she noticed something peculiar. A house in the woods, hidden by a soft magic that would only affect humans as she flew closer to inspect, quickly seeing a three headed dog woman chatting up a vampire and enjoying the vibes enough to fly down and join the conversation. It was weird sure but so was beryl's whole life. It didn't take long for them all to hit it up and eventually invite her to stay which she accepted happily. Not wanting to deal with the boring no nonsense gargoyles at Notre Dame.
She tried to sleep indoors but it didn't really feel right, so she started sleeping on the roof. Letting the sun turn her to stone to get a guaranteed night's sleep. During her stay she met the stone worker Phoebe and though their clashing vibes were a barrier for a bit, their shared passion for expression led to them dating each other~ with Beryl learning a thing or two about body paint to spice up their time in the bedroom. Though she's always more gentle with Phoebe due to her rough skin. And though she preferred sleeping on the roof it felt easy to sleep in bed with Phoebe too~
She also started trying to eat and quickly realized her favorite food was salt. When Cecilia jokingly mentioned that it sounds like beryl should eat rocks she decided to try just that and it turns out rocks and metals are a good diet for a gargoyle. With her being able to absorb some latent energy from the stones to modify and repair chips in her body
She took it hard when Notre Dame burned down, taking her fellow gargoyles to the Great beyond. But thankfully her new family helped her through it as best as they could. And Cerbie assured her that the afterlife isn't too terrible a place for most mortals. So it should be good for them too. She's recently started tagging places in town to advertise Limbus Divide and their concerts, using a special magical paint provided to her to advertise more exclusive shows~ so if you see a special tag in an alleyway. Perhaps it was just your friendly neighborhood gargoyle~
