The alien race I write about have eidetic memories; they can recall everything they've experienced , which could lead to utter paralysis from the weight of grief after a war or the death of a loved one.
The remedy is a sort of ritual, where they gather with family members and recall those memories, examine them and gradually draw their fangs by reinforcing the good and suppressing the bad. The memory's still there, but heir impact is blunted.
