I am working on my own homebrewed Fantasy Mexico inspired D&D Campaign set in a facsimile of the historical Spanish Conquest but dragged out longer like both sides are pretty evenly matched with the backup of Gods and Magic.
I decided to make my own group of 5 original Dragons for the setting based on some of the Aztec Gods. The Turquoise Dragon is based on the Patron god of the Aztec Empire: Huitzilopochtli and his Weapon/Companion a fun-sized Dragon and God of Fire who he wields like a Spiked Club named Xiuhcoatl the Turquoise Serpent.
Within Aztec cosmology the world is in a constant cycle of creation and destruction. The world we currently live in is believed to be the 5th incarnation of the Earth having been recreated over and over mainly because of Tezcatlipoca messing around...but we will get to that. Each world has been overseen by a different Sun God; Huitzilopochtli is the current Sun god doing his best maintain this world by carrying the Sun through the sky in the day and through the Underworld at Night while other gods and monsters are trying to take the sun from him and consume it.
In one version of his birth story, Huitzilopochtli was born as a full grown man with armor and already armed with his buddy Xiuhcoatl while his mother the Earth Goddess Coatlicue was under attack by an army of about 200 of her own children being lead by their sister, the Goddess Coyolxauhqui. Immediately as he arrived in the world it was time for business, protecting his mother from an army of his older siblings, dismembering and decapitating each and every one of them, and then throwing their heads into the sky where they transformed into the Moon and Stars. Huitzilopochtli was victorious in the battle but the war only just began, cause while they were decapitated his siblings were all still alive and wanted revenge so they live in constant pursuit of the Sun through the sky while Huitzilopochtli keeps the Sun moving so they can't catch up, and in order to keep up his strength to protect the sun, Huitzilopochtli needs frequent human sacrifices, but it's not seen as a bad thing...or as bad as it could be.
Huitzilopochtli was not actually the first picked to be the Sun God, probably cause he was not around at the time, that was originally another god named Tonatiuh. He had passed a literal trial by fire going from a nobody god to the beautiful Sun God, however his new found success had made this god arrogant and tyrannical, demanding an absurd number of sacrifices from Mortals and Gods alike or he would refuse to move the sun. Knowing what was at stake Huitzilopochtli overthrew Tonatiuh and took over relentlessly carrying the Sun, and only needing a more reasonable number of sacrifices to keep him going.
Huitzilopochtli is not always the most friendly deity as a War god, but he is very serious about his job making sure that there is still a world for mortals to live in, and he respects mortals who act in ways he considers Brave and Loyal. Humans who are ritually sacrificed to Huitzilopochtli, Warriors who die in battle, and Women who die in childbirth are all considered heroic deaths, and are honored by being reborn as one of Huitzilopochtli's Sun Hummingbirds.
Xiuhcoatl does not have as much lore around him as Huitzilopochtli since he mainly serves as his weapon, but he was said to be with Huitzilopochtli when he was born (Which I guess makes them brothers) and he dealt the finishing blow on Coyolxauhqui. Since Huitzilopochtli has his Hummingbirds, I imagine the Turquoise Dragons come from reborn followers of the in-game stand in for Xiuhcoatl. While the Hummingbirds help protect the Sun's journey around the sky and underworld, the Turquoise Dragons are the embodiments of Huitzilopochtli and Xiuhcoatl's will on earth.
They are not the nicest dragons being fierce warriors, but their duty is to protect humans, and make sure that there are worthy humans who are willing to give of themselves to maintain the world. They breath fire and are able to use their horn as a giant razor sharp axe
