80 years ago today Victory in Europe
I'm reposting a piece from 10 years ago. Mainly cause life's been hellish this past week to do art.
80 years ago today, the war in Europe was officially over. Hitler and the Nazis, defeated after 6 years of global hell. The last of the German forces, quite sizable, around 325,000 along with intact equipment, gear, weapons, even the U-Boat pens were still intact in Norway. They surrendered peacefully a couple days later.
I featured the "Big Three" to represent the key contributing combatants. Happy to be alive and knowing it was finally over. But Japan was still in the fight and Britain would be sending over its forces to assist in defeating Japan. Stalin would honor agreements to join the war against Japan 3 months later. But til then, many many more would be killed fighting a desperate Japan. Thankfully the nukes dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki seriously convinced Japan, things were going to get much much worse for them as a nation if they didn't surrender.
And as horrible those two nukes were, they in the long run SAVED more lives than they took. Japan was prepared to utterly slug it out to the last person. Especially after how they fought in Okinawa. Had Operations Olympic and Downfall were to take place, Japan was prepared to make the allies pay a heavy price. It was estimated that the US alone would have suffered over a half million killed in action alone, not counting, British, Australian and even Soviet lives. To this day, every single US Purple heart, awarded for wounds suffered in battle, were made just for Downfall (estimated 1.5-2.5 million wounded) Not to mention the loss of Japanese lives would easily topped into the millions had the planned invasions occurred.
Remember the Victory , the significance of it, and especially those that gave their lives fighting Nazi Germany to end that nightmare.

and now the world is faced with a new nazism in the person of muscovites and the people of moscovia (aka russia). they didn't defeat nazism, they inherited it. but instead of "no negotiations with terrorists" from the american president, who was elected by the stupid but racist american lumpen on the wave of "kick all migrants out of the us", we hear "let's make a deal". seriously? what a shame! back then the us was separated from europe and japan by TWO large beautiful oceans, the atlantic and the pacific. but still the war reached you too. and only after the attack on pearl harbor did you start doing something.
In 1939 when things got started in Europe, there was a sizable "No more involvement in Europe's Wars" movement among the American Citizenry. Then Roosevelt in 1940/41 allowed certain supplies to be transported to England and started 'Lend Lease' of WW1 Destroyers initially to allow the British to escort the transport ships to England. The U-Boats were taking a heavy toll of those ships and among the Submarine crews, known as "The Happy Times" due to all the tonnage sunk by the U-Boats and even the Atlantic Raiders. The U-Boats were literally prowling off the US East coast sinking ships left and right. The US started doing Neutrality Patrols along the US Territorial waters. It took the sinking of the destroyer USS Reuben James in October 1941 to beef up US escorting the England bound convoys. The Lend Lease Act allowed Britain to keep up the fight with Germany prior to December 7th 1941. Tanks, Aircraft, Munitions, Transport and Food were supplied to Britain, later Russia as well en mass. By Fall of 41, many US Citizens saw the writing on the walls that we'd be dragged into it again. And when Japan was acting up and grabbing territory between 37-41, the US cut off the Japanese to US supplied fuel oil, which infuriated the Japanese. Numerous warnings were made about the likelihood of war with Japan. But Europe was the center of attention. Plus everybody expected Japan to attack the Philippines...not Pearl Harbor, And that same day, Japan unleashed hell all over the place. Catching everybody with their pants down. SE Asia, HongKong, Philippines, Dutch East Indies and Pearl Harbor were all hit literally within 24-48 hours. Plus since it was a sneak attack, it infuriated the US Citizens massively, and it got the nation as a whole to join together. Much like how 9-11 did.
And Trump ran on the removal of UNDOCUMENTED migrants, Under Biden the US was FLOODED with between 10-15 MILLION undocumented aliens (That they KNOW OF!). Many of whom are known criminals, drug traffickers. They think the undocumented numbers could be as high as 18 million. Plus under Biden many of these were put up in hotels, given money, phones, health care when those that migrated in legally were shoved to the back of the line, along with ignoring the US poor. Along with the numerous criminal element who trafficked in human smuggling and drugs who ran amok doing all sorts of crime and even murder. That some of those criminals were deported repeatedly , only to sneak back in and pick up where they left off, doing more criminal activity. THOSE are the people Trump promised to remove first and foremost. Plus since Trump took office illegal aliens crossing the borders CRASHED hard, from tens of thousands per day to less than 90..NINETY!! Plus even the migrants who entered via points of entry and applied their applications properly are cheering this on.

"I cannot believe that this is the last word of the United States. I cannot believe that a nation whose Lend-Lease policy, which I myself called "the most selfless act in the history of the world," will act so brutally and harshly towards an ally who held the line while America was only preparing her weapons," Winston Churchill made this statement on August 24, 1945.
The then British Prime Minister Clement Attlee had just announced in Parliament that the United States was ending the largest aid program of the Second World War. The decision was made by American President Harry Truman after the capitulation of Japan.
One of the consequences of this decision was the signing of a large-scale credit agreement between Britain and the United States at the end of the same 1945, a victory for both allies. London finally paid off the United States under this agreement only in December 2006. And politicians, economists and historians are still arguing about the fairness and benefits of this agreement. (used google translator so mistakes may be happen)
This is somewhat similar to how your hucksters recently went to my country which at war is and presented a bill for 500 billion dollars, an amount that, by all accounts, was not even close to the real aid that your country provided.
regarding illegal migrants. well, u should to start with the "Russians"for deportation. I'm more than sure that 99% of them came to your country illegally through the Mexican border. oh no..they're "white". if a person is white, then he's not a priori a criminal according to the logic of Trump voters. and from there, many of them coordinate other migrants. and haven't you thought about the root cause of why the number of migrants has increased sharply? don't they tell you that Russia is sending migrants to the countries of the European Union through Belarus to destabilize the situation?

I'm sure you know this, but I've seen people say that the nukes were completely unnecessary to end WW2 in Japan because the Japanese people were on the verge of overthrowing Tojo and the rest of the Japanese government. Having visited Japan at the request of the US Government, I have a good idea of how they think, and their loyalty to the Emperor is unsurpassed. If we hadn't dropped the nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese people would have fought almost to the last person as long as Hirohito said they should.
Technically, Tojo was already gone -- he'd resigned the year before after the Marianas debacle. It's exceptionally unlikely (as you hint) that the Emperor would have been ousted by any popular uprising, even with the dire situation regarding food. It was the combination of the nuclear strikes and the threat of Russian invasion of the Home Islands that finally tipped the balance, and even then, it wasn't a sure thing. I was having debates on this point 40 years ago at university.
Oh, yes; in fact, I think you started to see debates not long after the war ended. By the 1980s (when I went to University), it was a red-hot topic. Remember that this was during a period when there were furious debates about nuclear weapons being stationed in Europe, so the discussion of their use in 1945 was front and center.
Yeah. It's strange when you think about it. Germany was working double time on developing one and, and a lot of people don't know this but, Japan was also working on one. People complain about America using it and ignore the fact that Germany and Japan wouldn't have hesitated to use one if they had had it.
Most discussions I've seen on the point indicate that the Germans hadn't gotten very far, mostly because of political squabbling, and the Japanese had progressed even less. Both did work on one, but they were years behind the US. Russia, via espionage, saved itself years of dead-ends to come in four years behind.
Even if conventional invasion of Japanese homeland is succesful, it is possible that the entirety of korean peninsula would fell into Soviet hand, possibly along with northern Japanese islands, which combined with utterly annihilated Japanese population, is undesirable for the oncoming coldwar climate
That's true. I watched a movie about Douglas MacArthur. In the movie, he's riding through Tokyo with a Soviet general. The Soviet general made an off-hand remark about the USSR occupying Hokkaido, and MacArthur told him in no uncertain terms that he will not allow Japan to be a divided country like Germany is (was). I don't know how true that scene was, but I can believe it.
