I had the idea of making my own homebrewed Aztec inspired D&D setting, so I decided to make a bunch of new player raced and creature inspired off of Aztec mythology
The Xolopilti (Children of Xolotl) are a humanoid Axolotl race who are said to have been created by Xolotl: The Eyeless Dog God of Twilight, Lightning, Twins, Monsters, Deformities, Illness, and Guide of spirits through the land of the dead.
The Xolopilti are not just amphibious, but are semi-ethereal beings who treat the boundaries between the living world and the realm of the dead like air and water living freely between the two, allowing them to move about in the material world almost like ghostly apparitions, phasing through walls. The Xolopilti are typically a peaceful people, they occasionally get up to mischief with their ghostly powers; like Axolotls they do not actually mature past adolescence, remaining youthful their entire demi-life, and because of their unique nature Xolopilti typically do not understand concepts like death treating it as a transitional stage rather than the end. They can usually just visit the dead as they please, however they believe that trapping a spirit on the material plane is a terrible crime, and will typically react quite harshly to those who try to meddle in the transition between life and death, but because death is not a punishment to them, they can think of fates much worse!
Every Xolopilti is born with a Twin who they share a spiritual link with. They most often come in vibrant sunset colors.
