"I will be honest, this end of the world is not so bad, people find me useful, I have a decent blacksmith workshop just for myself and I can keep away from the whole social dramas of the fortress! but of course I have responsabilities, I'm the only blacksmith here so crafting all the weapons and tools of the fortress are up to me, but its ok, thanks to my lycan blood I only need to sleep every few days, and my bestial muscles help me to make the metal sing the whole day!
But of course I'm not a master blacksmith, there is a lot of things I dont know, so I have to either learn on the go or improvise, for the first weeks I dedicated almost all my energy in making polearms, halberds and billhooks to fight the interlopers in close quarters, then the captain asked me if I could make crossbows to boost our wall defenses...it was a very chalenging task, I was able to craft some shoddy crossbows but they were nowhere near up to standarts, and they are a pain in the ass to forge.
After my failure with the crossbows I decided to try something bold, we had some spare powder, and the interlopers have a curious soft metallic material on their bodies that is perfect for bullets, so I put myself to work on a firearm, making the barrel was tough but I developed a relatively fast way to cast it, I had to discard many failed castings but finally after days of work my first arquebus was done!I could barely contain my excitement.
In the next morning the first thing I did was a public demonstration of my brand new weapon, I have to admit I was afraid the whole thing would blow on my face, but in the test the gun worked wonderfully, the captain was impressed but he wanted it tested against real interlopers, at first none of the soldiers were willing to test my arquebus in combat, until a crippled old man rose to the chalenge and said he was willing to test my weapon.
That old man with a peg leg was Earl, he lost everything he had to the interlopers, his family, his leg, his farm and his reason to live were all gone, now he was hellbent in have his revenge against the interlopers at all costs, 3 days later he had his chance, with the storm the interlopers came once again, and old man Earl was waiting for them in the gatehouse , he opened the battle with a bold shot blowing up the head of a random interloper, the battle was hard and bloddy as usual, many soldiers wounded and hundreds of interlopers dead, but Earl was joyful like a child, he was able to blast at least 21 interlopers with my gun, not a number to scoff at, the captain was more than satisfied with the results, he gave me permission to make more firearms and improve upon the design, he wants to equip a entire squad of arquebusiers to defend the fortress...and I'm eager to make the steel sing again!" dont mind me, I'm just obscessed with early firearms lately c:
