You know it always seem so strange in a world where animals can walk and talk like humans yet everyone reacts to them like they were our animals that run on instinct and impulses. Yeah, sure that guy is sharp, but he's more or less just a "strong looking man" any other day, why are they afraid of him like he'll attack anyone that'll get close to him, he's not feral anymore....
Exactly the kind of treatment the raccoons wanted for the guy.

Just because they can walk and talk doesn't mean they aren't instinctive and impulsive lol. In this world animals are kinda like kids, so an adult cat would have a similar mental capacity to around a 10-year old. (Hence why the fully adult cats here are playing pretend, and Daisy was tearing up the yard a few comics ago) So while they can walk and talk they're not quite on the "participate in human society" level yet. (though there might be some exceptions) Even Scratch and Bandit probably aren't doing rocket science anytime soon. For the most part animals tend to do their own independent thing and live by their more natural rules (cats using litter boxes and raccoons rummaging through trash for example) vs. human ones. Which is why even though Travis walks on 2 legs, the suburbanites are still scared of him. A wild tiger with no respect for humans could very well cause some serious damage, (including hunting pets/owners, causing property damage, or making a general ruckus)
Plus, even if Travis was considered "human", he'd be an 8 ft. tall 400lb. human with sharp teeth, night vision, and razor-like claws. Plenty dangerous in and of itself. It's like finding bigfoot in your yard.
But yeah, Travis sure knows what they're talking about now. I actually will explore the relationship between humans and animals, because speciesism IS a really big problem, but it's not without some basis behind it.

Not sure about cats, but it's been demonstrated that dog intelligence is on par with a 2-2.5 y.o. human kid. So even though the comic is a hyperbole, weirdly enough it's not a huge one
