If he's that worried about saddling someone with his last name, he should just move to Quebec: Not only does Quebec not require anyone take on their new spouse's last name, you can't even do it as part of getting married. If you want to take your husband's/wife's/etc's name, you have to do it through the same process as any other name change.

There have even been some cases where the Quebec government has not recognized such a marital name change when the marriage occurred both in another jurisdiction that does allow an automatic change and before the couple resided in Quebec.
