Originally Nelvana was conceptualized as Inuit/First Nations/Native American who got blown off course on a fishing trip and rescued by a Privateer (a pirate that sanctioned by a country to attack other countries ships). The captain was a British fox who was the only survivor of a pirate attack, who became a privateer in order to fight pirates (basically she pirate Batman.) I designed a couple of characters for the crew but Nelvana was the one that stuck out. I have 3 versions of her, a furry modern setting Nelvana Rogers who is a First Nations Canadian body builder, a My Hero Academia version who is also Canadian first nations and looks like a polar bear but her quirk is Magnetism and her hero name is "Polar Girl", and of course the original Pirate version.
