Northice in the uniform of the cavalery corps Jan of Werth one of nine tradition corps of the Cologne Carnival. Jan of Werth was a cavalry General in the thirty year of War.(1618-1648) The cavalry corps Jan of werth was created 1925 in honor to the General Jan of Werth who freed Cologne and the Rhineland in year 1637 from french soldiers. There is also a Legend:

It was in the thirty years war. Jan was born as son of a farmer in the lower rhine region, but he works in Cologne on a farm. He often thinks about his future to own his own country, farm and animals, but he was also excited to explore the world high to horse. But he knows where he belongs, also because of the beautiful maid Griet. One day he ask her if she wants to Marry him, but Griet just laugh at him " Who do you think you are? What can a poor son of a farmer bid? I'm looking for the right one and you are for sure not the Person". Griet wanted something better than Johann.

Jan's dreams get destroyed, but he stay stubborn and that way he goes to the military for honor and fame. He wanted to make carrier in the military. He goes as mercenary with the spanish army, which was in war with the Netherlands to that point. Years past and Jan carrier raises, from an easy mercenary to an General. The goal for a quick home coming was away, even the pictures of griet were not clear visible anymore. In Cologne the people were looking with excitment about Jans carrier, cause his troops secure the trade routes of the city, so that the year 1637 was important for Cologne as Jan frees the Stronghold Ehrenbreitstein(Koblenz) and opens the trade routes for the city again, which were blocked by the french soldiers.


One day a Message makes it's way through Cologne. "Jan of Werth is coming to Cologne". The whole city was gathered as Jan ride through the gate. Excited people, traders who were looking for good deal and also maid Griet, which becomes now Market Woman. Her Hair was now grey and her eyes were sad. She didn't found what she was looking for. No men with money wanted to have her. Jan rides through the city, which were cheering behind him his escort. Then he finds Griet, his love of his youth. he dismount his horse " Are you Griet? It is long ago" Griet looks at him with sad eyes" Jan, now you are General"who would have done it back then" Griet sigh and answered "Jan, who would have known back then!" Then he mounted his horse and ride away. They never then saw each other again. The story is about as missed opportunity. And when we got in Cologne a missed Opportunity, then we say:"Wer et hätt jewoss, der et hätt jedonn!"(who had know it, has done it)
