A Friend of mine invited me to a game he is running called "Mutants in the Now", a roleplay game system similar to D&D that is mainly inspired by shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battletoads, Street Sharks, and other Mutant Animal series that were popular in the 90's
Karma was a former human, turned mutant Chameleon man. In his former life, the person now known as Karma was the son of a mafia boss and first heir to their organized crime gang known as the Amata-Ryu (The Head Clan). The Amata-Ryu used to be part of the Japanese Yakuza but diverged and established their own independent organization in America and parts of Europe. They adopted the appearance and tactics of traditional feudal era Japanese Ninjas as sort of brand to make them unique among other organized crime syndicates and as an advantage. Ninjas are historically particularly good at not being seen or caught. If they are seen then Western Media has doubled down the impression that people should be scared of a group of Ninja and good luck getting the authorities to take you seriously if you claim to have seen real Ninjas. If they are caught then they are taught that it's better to die with honor and leave no remains to protect the clan or allow them to gain any information from you or your body.
Karma's former self took the clan very seriously, but he was also very much an arrogant elitist jerk. He was obsessive about trying to be authentic to traditional ninjas and particularly strict with his subordinates who did not show the same level of devotion, he was particular proud of his own skills believing himself to be exceptional, and he used to recruit children off the streets impressing them with the idea that they could be Ninjas and have a life that means something, before being a brutal teacher breaking them in so they think that the Clan is their only option and are willing to die for the sake of the clan.
Against his advise, his father made a business deal with an up and coming new experimental genetics company called Gen-Corp to be used as hired Mercenaries. Karma's former self did not appreciate the idea of being told what to do by somebody outside the clan, so against his father's orders he snuck off on his own to try to infiltrate Gen-Corp and steal information to give the clan some vital leverage to use against Gen-Corp if ever they needed to be reminded who they are dealing with. He managed to find and steal a vial of a mutagenic chemical compound, codenamed: "GOO" and stash it on his person but the vial broke on him when he ran afoul of a Mutant Guard Bear who knocked him out with a blow to the head and gave the former Karma permanent brain damage resulting in the retrograde variant of amnesia, losing most of his memories prior to waking up after the incident transformed into a Mutant Chameleon in a Gen-Corp Laboratory Prison. Karma lost his name, and whatever fragments of memory he did have were like a handful of puzzle pieces that don't fit together and the rest of the puzzle was burned, there is no way for him to completley get those memories back, and as a side effect he's also prone to getting migraines and seizures under certain circumstances.
With the few memories he had, he believed that he was actually a Japanese Ninja who needed to find his clan, and came up with the alias of Karma after hearing the song "Karma Chameleon" playing on the radio while in the prison, which inspired what he wanted to be, the embodiment of Karmic Justice who brings about the downfall of those who deserve it. He saw and was a part of the horrible experiments that Gen-Corp was working on and vowed that as soon as he escapes, he would destroy Gen-corp completley but it would prove to be more difficult than he originally thought. He managed to escape with a group of mutant comrades in a mass prison break and found a place to hide in a hidden forest bunker but at the time Karma was not ready to grow attached to any of his allies, just seeing them as a resource towards getting vengeance, but as they started to investigate they began to learn just how big of a threat they would be fighting.
First of all, the Amata-Ryu are still partnered with Gen-Corp and have used their genetics resource to become a whole new kind of beast! Rather than being run by Karma's Father anymore, his brother took over after Karma was assumed dead and his father stepped down as head of the clan out of grief, and his brother decided to make major changes to himself and the Clan as a whole. Then after seeing Karma and figuring out that it's his thought to be dead brother back from the grave, he considers Karma a traitor to the clan and a threat to his leadership.
Meanwhile through information gleaned from members of the Amata-Ryu, Karma has learned he used to be one of them, and that his former self was not somebody he would be proud of, he has a father somewhere out there, and his brother wants him dead.
Secondly, Gen-Corp is not actually a start up business but just the public face of an entire secret Mutant civilization being run by a terrifying T-Rex Mutant Warlord who wants to dominate the world of humanity. If they are going to put a stop to them and Hostile Human Factions then they are going to need a lot more allies than they have right now.
In Chameleon Colors darker colors, especially black can mean Stress, Anger, or be used to display that they are Threatening, while Blue typically means Relaxed, Calm, Focused. To be a good Ninja he needs to have both under control. Real Ninjas typically wore dark blue so they could blend in against a pre-industrial night sky but in the modern day black blends in better especially in a city. In order to maintain this color Karma needs to harness his anger and wrath but can't let anger lead him to making rash decisions.
The other part of it is to stay focused and calm, but not too calm that he's not prepared to strike when he sees the perfect moment to strike. Somewhere between Rage and Serenity is where he finds his balance like maintaining a blue flame, which eventually gives him the power of the Blue Flames.
Karma is going to come collect his debt.
