Spring 13, Year 2

Beep hadn't thought to bring his saddlebag, mostly because it wouldn't have fit in the first place, and secondly it put uncomfortable pressure on his sides. As a result, he couldn't take any of the cool and interesting resources he saw on his way up the volcano. It was super lucky he knew magic, or he wouldn't have been able to cross the lava flows. Pulling out the heat from the lava and venting it outwards cooled the lava enough for Beep to walk on. It was nerve wracking the first few times, but then Beep figured out the specifics to keep the igneous rock stable. The water pool near the entrance must've been for filling some sort of bucket or similar water container for similar reason, except using water to rapidly cool the lava. Thankfully, Beep didn't need to worry about that, or running out of water.

At the top, and after beeping at the Dwarf midway through, Beep looked around the cauldron of the volcano. Some sort of mechanical thing was set in the centre. As he approached, an invisibility spell faded, and Beep was face to face with someone. Ears pinned and concerned about his ability to flee in this dangerous zone while gravid, the man simply expressed his knowledge Beep was a peryton, and an odd one at that. Then he faded away, either invisible or teleported, it wasn't known. Scenting the air was useless, all he could smell was heat from the lava bubbling around him.

The forge, used to strengthen weapons, or enchant his tools. It was fed by lava, and required the pinkish crystals Beep had seen on his way up. He'd have to come back and get some. As he sat down, his head drooped as he remembered long nights of watching one of his mates working at his forge. A bubble of silence around Beep to mute the clanging, head on his wing as he fell asleep watching metal change shape into something beautiful. He'd seen swords take form, spears polished to a shine, and the diadem carefully shaped to fit a small deer's head. He decided not to wear it the day he arrived here. Why did he fuck around with those artefacts? They were in a chest for a reason. He didn't even know which one did this, or if it came with him.

Night was beginning to arrive before Beep snapped out of it. He quickly took the direct path down, flipping the switch to open the way from base directly to the cauldron. Much easier than climbing back down through the volcano. He took the boat back to the main land, wings open to feel the wind, eyes closed as he recalled the faces of his mates.

He would get home.
