Let's return to the middle of this story.
Sully was absolutely certain he'd topped his prize pumpkin from last year. He didn't even use any "special fertilizers" this time around—he was just that talented a cultivator. To be fair, he wasn't entirely certain he'd fully decontaminated the garden from the... experiments he'd carried out with last year's crop, but what the county fair administrators didn't know wouldn't hurt them.
Besides, the Boss had even given it his official seal of approval. In reality Emmet had merely grunted and ordered Sully to once again clean up the mud he'd tracked into his living room, but he didn't raise any explicit objections, and that was as good as a seal of approval, right?
As Sully pushed his triumphal barrow towards the fairgrounds entrance, he knew he was drawing stares—and it wasn't just because he was wearing his good overalls with two intact straps. At the end of the day, you just can't argue with results.

I've often wondered what Sully's reputation amongst the townspeople must be.
When he walks into an establishment it must be like greeting the wizard's apprentice. He's a nice guy. He's not here to lord it over anyone. At the same time, though, he's a bringer of chaos.
But what do you do? Technically he hasn't broken any laws (what law has he broken here for example?), and you don't want to turn him away and potentially make the wizard angry. So you say your how-do-you-dos while quickly checking if you still have the piece of paper with the wizard's phone number written on it, just in case Sully sneezes and opens up another howling portal or turns everyone into pigeons.
At the same time Sully's not dumb. He knows how people see him. He also knows that if he leaves Emmet's apprenticeship, he'll both lose access to valuable wizardry knowledge and it won't do a thing to change his image.

Sully will learn a valuable lesson from this, and ironically it might be the reverse of a "Sorcerer's Apprentice"-style moral. He already tried to make this year's pumpkin "legitimate." It was an accident that it wasn't. It doesn't matter: if he comes back for a third year people will already know what to expect.
It may be why Sully sank himself so deeply into farming. It was the simplest, least "magical" pastime he could think of, and still the wizardry contaminated it.
Lesson learned: you can't simultaneously embrace something and seek an escape from it. You can embrace two things, but trying to draw sharp barriers between pieces of your identity can only lead to chaos.

.......I think working with toxic/radioactive material just by your own could be considered a mayor crime...
how odd...I thought Emmet's existence was only know by so few of the habitants near by...mainly due to his repair shop...
