Or 'I'll show you mine if you show me yours'?
Anyhow, recently
goattrain set up a commission opening with 'bounties', where you could get a discount if the request involved one of a few specific characters. And one of the characters was Milly Thompson from the anime Trigun. I remembered watching that show over twenty years ago at the York Anime and Manga Association, and then again more recently with some other friends. Milly was always a fun character. We get introduced to her when this relative giant of a woman with a high-pitched and somewhat child-like voice walks into a rough-looking bar along with her shorter and more dangerous partner. Several members of the bar are basically looking at her like 'fresh meat' or 'easy pickings' when she orders milk at the bar. Then she drops this massive rotating cannon out from under her coat which makes things bounce when it hits the floor, goes "Oops!" and casually picks it up one handed and slings it over her shoulder, making everybody else reassess her threat level and back off. We never really do know if that was on purpose, but bits that happen later in the series show she's a lot smarter than she usually comes off as, even if she is still rather more optimistic than the world around her seems to warrant.
In any case, given the obviously Wild West-inspired setting of the anime, matching Milly up with the period-appropriate version of Skunkworks, La Mofeta de Hierro. And I figured that Milly, kind and curious person that she was, would be fascinated by someone unusual like this while the gunsmith was looking over her weapon...
(The cannon was actually fairly non-lethal, matching up with Milly's relatively nice personality. It's not a really long-range weapon, and it fires out long folded panels that unfold into an X- or cross-shape in flight and smack into the target with enough force to knock them away, but spread out enough to not do too much permanent damage.)

It's actually a weapon that could probably be built now. But you would need to be a big and strong person to handle the recoil, the ammunition would quickly become more expensive than the gun, and it's only really useful in fairly open spaces and where you're interested in taking someone down alive if possible. And if you really want to take someone alive you have to be a good shot because you're more likely to hurt someone if you don't hit them perfectly centered.
So it's a neat weapon but the number of places where it's the best choice is small.

Hmm... not quite. MGL looks to be a revolver grenade launcher: magazine rotates; barrel, firing mechanism, and handles stay still. Milly's weapon is really more of a Gatling grenade launcher: magazine and barrels rotate; firing mechanism and handles stay still.
Also the shells being launched are sort of like spring-loaded umbrellas in that they flip open once they're outside of the barrel. That's part of why it needs to be a Gatling weapon with rotating barrel: the shells actually are long enough to start with that they take up half of the barrel before they're fired. It is not a quick weapon to reload.

What's really fun is considering the difference of arsenal between Milly and Meryl - the other insurance agent is well-armed too. It just happens to be a lot of single-shot derringers if I recall...
Also because I can say it: the English dub has Johnny Yong Bosch doing a wonderful job. Really need to rewatch sometime soon. (And believe if this was a crossover, Vash is probably nursing a bruise after meeting La Mofeta... Either to his ego or... otherwise.)

Yeah, "Stun Gun Milly" and her partner "Derringer Meryl", who had something like three dozen pre-loaded and holstered single-shot guns lining the inside of her cape. It's an interesting tactic: if one jams, just toss it and grab another; and they're all concealable and perfect for a smaller frame like hers.
As for crossovers, yeah, Vash would likely be sporting a bruise of some sort, but nothing more; he'll have some fun but he's not going to seriously piss off the person cleaning and maintaining his weapons. He plays the fool, but he's not stupid either. (And unlike Milly, for him it's a bit more of an conscious act.)
(And good lord I just thought of a possibility: imagine Robin Williams playing Vash, as somebody who uses a clown act to cover his own depression... that probably hits a little too close to home.)

I've seen all of the original anime, and bits of the recent remake Stampede... one of the things I liked about the original was that you learned most of what was going on along with Meryl and Milly, and getting most of the background only midway through the series made you re-evaluate a lot of the earlier craziness now that you actually had the proper framework it fit into.
Stampede somewhat understandably started with 'everybody probably knows the basic story so we're not surprising anybody' and delivered more of the background up front.
