Oaxacan Barn Owl Dragon, 2016
11x14 colored pencil on vellum bristol, 2016. Approximately 32 hours of work.
This happy gal is still one of my favorite colored pencil paintings I've made. <3 Ages ago, I had a full series inspired by the woodcarvings of Oaxaca, Mexico, better known as alebrijes.
I stopped making them when my anxiety over cultural appropriation consumed me. Granted, I never wanted to be *known* for this series; it was a fun project I gave myself after college, on my aunt's suggestion after I visited her in San Carlos. I'm still grateful for how these pieces connected with folks at conventions. One of my friends bought the Big Cat for his ofrenda! 🥰
