As a DM and Player both of TTRPG's it is a sacred rule. This song will never not be relevant in that regard i feel.

I run two campaigns as a Dungeon Master myself. And I gotta say, yea that's a big rule.
Not just cause it causes the sessions to drag out and the DM having to balance both parties when split, but if one gets caught in a bad situation, that's how you lose people. Hell, the few Player deaths WERE cause of this, and it is always tragic when the other split party is too far to help, let alone retrieve the body (or what's left of it).
Hopefully nothing happens to our beloved heroes in this comic but yaaaa the risk is always too great when this happens.

As Much as I like Tristan. He’s gonna get himself and others killed. Being helpful doesn’t always translate to Self-preservation!

This is one of those occasions where Leo clearly deserves some sort of reprimand for being such a jerk, unlike the previous times, but being in that cave will make him have to experience it once it happens anyway, except that will make it a serious problem for the rest of the team as well; not just him.
One thing I can't help but think about... the Tree rejected Nigel because she was concerned about him becoming a Guardian when his heart wasn't in the right place for it. Then I look at Leo, and his absolute lack of positive character traits. And the only thing I can think is that apparently Nigel would have been even worse, somehow, and I shudder to wonder what that might have looked like.
I think the main reason the Tree rejected Nigel in first place is because she saw that he possibly will become a seer (some sort of wiseman as well) and tried to push him toward scholar path, but considering circumstances of Nigel's life we have seen what happened so far in comic.
The thing about Leo though, I think he hates being useless (this is why he put so much into training and not into socializing) and treat others in same way (if you can't offer at least some skills you're basically "nobody" in his opinion).
