I've been focusing on commissions for a while, but I figure it's time to give this old personal project some love. And I figured it'd be cool to show off some behind the scenes notes as well. So here's the deal. I've added my revision notes the last version I published here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52683115/
And below are all my notes for this latest version. Should be cool for some people to see the before and after and see how things have changed:
0:00 – Much happier with the opening. I love the interplay between the environment and the spaceship flying past. Namely how the leaves in the trees are rocked and the sound of the ship slapping off the ground. Plus there’s a nice use of loud and quiet moments.
0:12 – In hindsight maybe I should’ve gotten some more breathing sounds from Blutengel (the voice actor playing Wark the alien bounty hunter) but in the end I like how that forced me to re-approach the layout of this scene and start the dialogue sooner. And although I cut down on the amount of lever and button sounds, what ones are still there are more punchy and relevant to the action!
0:50 – Ok this is a bit I made hard for myself. I like the visual of the alien just calmly planting the ship disabling device on the hull mid-stride like a pro. In my head the bounty hunter parks right next to their target’s ship and plants the device discretely. But it’s something that needs visuals or dialogue to make the moment “read.” So I overhauled this bit. Now Wark takes his time planting the device, the device sounds more aggressive and I added a little digital voice too.
1:00 – Varl finally has a proper voice rather than placeholder sounds! I think the voice is kinda cool. I’ll probably re-work it at some point, but I really like the space created when Wark leans in conspiratorially to ask about his target.
1:11 – OK tried to balance out the reverb and live music sounds. Too much distortion in the music, while realistic sounding, just gave me a headache. It was also interesting trying to try and layer in the crowd alien vocals. Both VoiceVixxen and LewdZaxk did an awesome job – but I realized that I had to bury their voices a bit so it was clear that these are just people passing by, rather than anyone we’re meant to be listening to like Val. Luckily both actors gave performances that were crispy and interesting so they add a really good texture even a low volume. And of course the voices panning by hopefully sells the illusion that we’re walking past various conversations. It ended up being a lot shorter, but I think it’s stays loud long enough to give the idea of the alien club without overstaying its welcome.
1:20 – This is way better now that I’m following my own advice. Music fades away subtly just before the book reveal and gives that whole moment a lot more space. I really like all the strange sounds Wark makes. I really wanna imply some giant and strange alien body, but the last version was getting in the way of the dialogue. So here I really pulled back the amount of movement sounds. I find saving movement sounds as punctuation between sentences is usually the best approach. Plus we get that fun giant maw opening at the end.
That’s it for now! Really looking for the next bit which is going to be more action packed.
