Counting the Bōank, Varan had thirteen ships under her command by the time the three days were up. Selecting the ships had been a problem, as several captains had to be disappointed, but her force was departing J’Shavar Base for a point in deep space beyond the range of the base’s sensor arrays.
They actually went far beyond that and took up stations well beyond the system’s heliopause. Varan mentally excused herself for her paranoia. Her force were the attackers, and any intelligence the larger defending force could get would be to their advantage, not hers.
The other captains were physically aboard her ship rather than risk even secure communications being compromised, and she smiled and greeted them all as the last one entered the conference room and took a seat. “First, I repeat my thanks to you all for volunteering for this exercise.”
“Our enemy will fear our claws,” the captain of Ferocity said. The others chuckled at the kam’s assertion.
Varan laughed along with the rest of the group. “I plan on making that happen,” she said as the holoemitter in the table activated. The display showed the base, with the system around it. “Victory conditions for our force require us to destroy or severely damage the base while keeping our casualties at under fifty percent.” The others gestured comprehension.
“They can just concentrate around the base,” the captain of Biter remarked. “After that, it’s merely a matter of attrition.”
“I agree,” Varan said to the vir. “Therefore, we are going to discard all orthodox Imperial tactics regarding attack and defense.” She grinned, showing teeth.
“Let’s begin,” and the other captains began to access the tabletop, several frowning as they began thinking through the problem.

Of course, but she's seen/thought things that the others don't have the past/background on. They (and their 'enemy') have all had the same base training, but she's been 'outside the box' a bit more often. Just a little added twist that the other wouldn't expect them to think of - much less try ...
