As you'll no doubt be aware - mainly because I keep banging on about it - it was on this day in 1985 that Terry Askew first came up with the concept of Space Gypsy, the series which became one of the foremost inspirations behind SPCM. I always like to post something on this date to commemorate it, and this year is no exception.
Space Gypsy takes a great deal of inspiration from other British sci-fi, and if there's one thing that British sci-fi loves, it's filming in old quarries to create alien landscapes on a budget. This was overwhelmingly common in the 70s and 80s, to the point that there's one story of a Blake's 7 shoot in one such quarry being interrupted by noises from the other end - which turned out to be coming from a Doctor Who shoot!
Sadly, evidence of filming dates makes this story apocryphal, but the mental image was too funny not to use as inspiration. I originally intended to go into more detail regarding what both parties were using this quarry for, but I ended up only having so much time to work on this piece. You can draw your own conclusions - they'll probably be funnier than anything I can come up with...
