Here's something I don't upload very often: pop/jazz style pieces. On our most recent recital, my quintet performed Valerie Coleman's "Spirituals Volume 1." This is the third movement, based on "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit."
From about 1:25 to 1:38 we were supposed to improvise over the bassoon line. I do not improvise, so I composed an "improvised" solo during those bars, and I like how it turned out!

I can't improvise, either. It pisses off the other players in the drum corps when they say "let's improvise" and I keep my instrument down and wait until they're finished. XD
My friend and first crush couldn't improvise either, whenever he had to play a part he had to improvise he'd compose something beforehand and commit it to memory, especially if he couldn't look at sheet music doing Jazz band.

Jazz improv is something that you have to dedicate years to learning if you want to do it really well. The only people I've heard do it well are professional jazz players who've been doing it for like 20 years. As an orchestral player, improv is just never required. On the rare occasion that it does come up in a pops concert or something, I've seen skilled professionals look like amateurs trying to improvise. So when I must, I compose something in advance. It's still original material, just not spontaneous. But at least I sound good in the performance- haha! ^o^
In my high school jazz band we had people who worked really hard at it, and they sounded... okay. We had a director who said before a performance that we all MUST improvise and he would point to each of us at some point and we had to stand up and improvise. I arranged for the trombone sitting behind me to stand up and take a solo every time the director pointed to me. The director got so mad when the trombone player took like 5 solos in a row! XD
