"The fuck?! I'm like three minutes late and you rented it to someone else already?"
"Hey, late's late, buddy. You reserved a van for pickup at exactly six-o-clock and didn't show. Someone else did, so it goes to them."
"I paid a deposit!"
"Non-refundable."
The big bug-looking man in front of Joe looked livid. If his face wasn't already red it probably would have been glowing, but Joe stood his ground calmly, knowing there was nothing the guy could legally do to him.
"Look asshole, my band has a gig tonight on the one night our normal ride breaks down, and we have a lot of heavy shit to haul to the venue. I need this van!"
"Beat it, freak!"
The bug would've been clenching his teeth hard if he had any. He may have had a few inches of height on him, not even counting the guy's freakishly long neck, but Joe wasn't intimidated in the slightest. He had gotten into scraps with larger people and won. To Joe' surprise, however, the bug's aggression faded, his livid face morphing into a bitter sneer, then into an equally-bitter smirk.
"Alright. I was saving this for the show, something to wow the audience near the end of it, but if I'm not gonna get there anyway I might as well do it now."
Joe raised an eyebrow as the bug pulled a pill bottle out of his pocket and popped one of its contents in his mouth. He watched in amusement as the guy swallowed it, as if doing drugs right in front of him would intimidate him any. Joe had fought off coked-up crackheads too; there was nothing that could surprise him.
The bug's sudden growth spurt surprised him.
Joe watched in horror as the bug doubled in size with a loud rumble, then doubled again. In three quick bursts, he had grown tall enough that Joe's rental building barely came up to his waist. Fighting instincts kicking in, Joe wasted no time darting away as quickly as he could, only to feel something massive crash into him and press him face-first into the ground.
"Oh, where do you think you're fucking going?" boomed the titanic insect, "If I'm not going to that concert, then I'll just have to give you a private show right here!"
Joe felt the weight on top of him drag him backwards along the ground. He then heard a loud thud accompanied by the creaking of metal. The weight moved sideways, rolling Joe onto his back so he could see that the thing pinning him down was a massive, red foot. The bug had taken a seat on the van, the vehicle's impressive suspension struggling to hold his weight. Joe felt a toe bigger than his torso press down on his chest while the rest of the foot's meaty sole pinned his lower body underneath it.
"Comfy, bitch? You know what? I think I'll just go to the gig like this. Wow them right out the gate, you know? But I'm still gonna need something to carry all of our shit in. How about you rent me this van like you were supposed to?"
Joe could barely breathe, much less reply, but he could tell that the bug got all response he needed from him struggling.
"Great!"
The bug stood back up, pressing Joe hard into the ground with his full weight. The pressure only grew more exacerbated when the bug causally picked up the van and tucked it under an arm. Then it was released all at once as the bug lifted up his leg, Joe firmly stuck underneath the foot from his light sweat.
"F-fuck you, you bug freak!" Joe wheezed. The bug's smug grin only grew wider.
"What's that? You're giving me this van for keeps? How generous of you! As thanks, I'll take you to the concert with me as a VIP. You're so comfy under my foot like this, you'll make a great pad for my bass pedal!"
Joe didn't have the time to be indignant, as the first of what would be many footsteps slammed him into the ground. He had screwed over the wrong customer, and he was in for a long night.
This was an experiment to see how easy it would be to set up a render entirely in UE5, and it was kind of a success! 5.4's new modular control rig system does make setting up rigs on characters actually doable instead of infinitely tedious, but it is very buggy and the rig modules it comes with are rudimentary compared to the kinds of rigs I can set up in Maya. Animating these things is an absolute non-starter, as posing with the controls even with the new gizmos is horrendously awkward at best and tedious at worst. There are tons of little issues that pile up to make the whole experience kind of a slog. With all that said, for still images at least it is a huge boon to be able to just plonk a character directly in an environment and pose them without having to set up an export pipeline from Maya, so it might be viable for future renders, especially if the tools actually get better over time.
