She *wants* to go upstairs, but she feels bad about it.
She *knows* it's ok to stay downstairs, but her heart won't let her (she's touching the railing).

The conflictual nature of the situation, as he is *upstairs*, which signifies positivity and absolution, while she is downstairs (hell, underworld, pain).
Her going upstairs (in her eyes) would only bring him down with her... but would lift her heart, her desire, for a moment... only to tumble back down again.
