Winston definitely sees himself as ‘better’ than other nurks due to his education. Whilst the others are diseased and flea ridden and living in alleyways, he is well groomed and eloquent and has an entire museum displaying his research.
But he is imprisoned by the throws of society. Spending hours a day scrubbing his fur clean, sticking to a strict regimen of ‘acceptable’ behaviour. When he sees the other nurks, he sees that they sneer at his snobbish, prudish ways. And they are free. And they are happy.
When socialising with his fellow intellectuals, it’s always “you’re so clean, for a nurk”, “you’re so smart, for a nurk”, he can never and will never escape that he is the same as the sewer dwellers he reviles and envies. The worst of both worlds. So he continues to collect his scraps and rotted bones…
