Ah, the Giant Salamander! Rumored to be the most un-cute critter that exists, but it certainly has its own unique charms. Let's dive into the intriguing realm of these aquatic giants.
Found in the murky river bottoms in Japan and China, these creatures have some really interesting features, besides being repulsive. To begin, they grow to 5 feet in Japan and as large as 6 feet and 55 pounds in China. Yes their size is impressive, but the way they feed is most unique. With a large throat patch that expands and a dislocatable jaw; in a split second they create a vacuum that pulls in huge amounts of water, and any eatable titbit passing by. And they can stay on the bottom of rivers long times waiting for something to pass by as their skin absorbs oxygen. They really are well adapted to river living. But they do have one main predator - humans.
A Chinese delicasy at restaurants is Giant Salamander at $50 per pound. There are even salamander farms that raise them. But in the wilds of China there are only 24 individuals found in a recent four year survey. And most of these individuals probable escaped from the farms.
And there you have it—the Giant Salamander, a creature of contrasts. From monsterous size with jaw-dropping feeding method and skin-deep respiration to endangered VIP status and culinary controversy. If you're intrigued (and perhaps a little bewildered), dive deeper into the world of Giant Salamanders with these links.
Remember, my friends, sometimes the most un-adorable creatures hold the greatest secrets. Until next time, keep your eyes peeled for those riverbank shadows!
