Funny, I had the opposite experience with a particular soap opera. It seemed like it was taking forever for things to move along, until one day, I had to stop watching for whatever reason. A few months go by, I see a new episode - and things were *wildly* different. Or at least, that's how it seemed, anyway, haha. Although like you, I ended up not watching anymore. XD

Actually, you aren't too far off the truth. In actuality, the original soap operas (radio shows) were sponsored by soap companies back when there were about 40 soap manufacturers in this country and each sponsored a different soap opera.
