illustration of the poetry "Марш Марадёров" (1974) by Alexander Galich. The poem and artwork are not tied to any real historical events, ethnos or lands (at least I don't remember anything like that in the official history) I think its is a ballad about cunning. Let me recount the plot:
The poem describes how marauders are came to a town which is held under siege by soldiers. They begin to feel like owners of the land, because the locals "hide in their holes like mice" and don't dare cross the strangers path when they looting and having fun
One day, the marauders boldness reaches its peak, and they are causing a pogrom at the military base. They return to the town carrying the flag signifying victory in their hands that was stolen from the occupiers. Locals recognize them as heroic liberators and hold a parade in their honor, showering marauders with flowers.
After completing the celebratory march, the "heroic liberators" lie to chroniclers, claiming that it everything was looted... by soldiers! It was decided that the villain-soldiers should be shot and the victors should be celebrated forever.
